Your Christmas/Holiday Traditions?

One of my favorite is to watch "White Christmas" and "Merry Christmas Charlie Brown". Simple, but with good messages with timeless songs and messages in them.

I'll be hosting my annual XMas Orgy this year. Other than that, just the usual.

Watching Elf, playing Rook and Scrabble. A lot of my family go to Mass even though we aren't Catholic - it's just something that's interesting to see and be a part of. There is something called "the Magic Tree" in my area that has literally millions of lights on it. You go out and take pictures and be with family. It's always good for Christmas. Also having a Christmas dinner is a big thing even if it isn't on Christmas. We pretty much have a second Thanksgiving. We invite a lot of friends and family over. Somehow Fiddler on the Roof and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers always come out.

What do you do when it's more than just you though?

Pretty much the same, just add some food and more booze.

Plus the Airing of Grievances:

For the last couple of years it was meatballs and glogg on the evening of December 24th, then a regular working day on the 25th. A sort of Swedish/Chinese fusion Christmas.

The only traditional thing I have in the UK is that when I'm together with my siblings (for any holiday, but usually it's only at Christmas) there will always be a day where we sit down for a heated, hours-long game of risk \:D/

Is there something new and different about your usual/annual XMas Orgy?

We already did some of the traditions (namely, a family outing to cut down, put up, and decorate the Christmas tree).

Christmas Eve, I help Santa Claus by putting together various toys and end up going to sleep, usually drunk, at 2 or 3 AM. So I'm looking forward to that.

I really don't have any solid traditions. Christmas lights on the outside of the house might be one of them. Decorating the inside has been delayed due to my overbooked singing schedule. Attempting to put up the old horrible artificial tree may be out this year. (I ordered a small live tree from the internet flower shop and it will arrive on Friday, thus allowing me to migrate from fake trees to real trees SLOWLY.)

I did, however, decide to participate in another tradition for the first time. I booked a time at a local restaurant where they are doing the traditional Italian (5 fishes) Christmas Eve dinner. I'm bringing my mother ... fortunately they have a non fish option since she hates fish.

Usually nothing exciting for Christmas. Go to church in the morning and, as a result, leave with my Dad, step-mum and mildly extended family. Couple of hours later go to my Mum's and step-dad's. End of.

The best thing is having two full Christmas dinners between 1pm and 4pm.

However, this year I'll be staying at a friend's on Christmas Eve so we'll probably get really high and then wake up to bacon, coffee and champagne. Oh and the three of us are giving each other the cheapest, funniest presents possible. Then as above. Then going to a different friends to get absolutely fucked up. Good times.

My annual tradition, since 1981, is to be alive on Christmas. Haven't missed one yet, and I'm hoping not to miss this one either.

Growing up, we made our own decorations.. paper red and white hearts, plus red and white roses (traditional). We opened presents on Christmas Eve when we were at our house (per my Dad's tradition), on Christmas Day when at my Grandparents' (their tradition). We had to guess what was in each package before we opened it. Usually had pork roast for supper. Always had rice pudding with an almond hidden in it. The one who found the almond got a prize. After Then we danced around the tree. As we got older, we played a lot of cards -- usually hearts or bridge.
'
Charlie Brown's Christmas was a definite must, ever since it first came on TV.

Now, with my own kids, we have more store bought decorations, though I still try to make some. Prime Rib has replaced pork roast, though we still do have the rice pudding with an almond for someone to find. We also still guess what is in each package. We watch Charlie Brown, but more for my sake than the kids'. We also watch Grinch, a Christmas story and Its a wonderful life.

I generally spend Christmas eve haunted by obnoxious ghosts. Then I give a goose to a crippled kid and it saves his life, or something.

5 fishes? I thought it was 7, though the "fish" part includes seafood? Maybe this is a regional difference?

I'm about to go drink some Northern Harvest Special Edition Rye by Crown Royal (which I got for Christmas) and snuggle with the wifey and watch A Fistful of Dollars.

It's not really a Christmas tradition, but it ought to be.
