I haven't followed the Trump campaign at all, so I have no solid evidence for anything. I think he started as a kind of game or to see what would happen (i.e. feed his ego). Once he started winning polls, I think he now thinks he can win and he thinks he can win without changing what he does. A lot of my family and friends are conservatives. Not one of them is a Trump supporter. I wonder if Trump is like Nickelback - popular, sells lots of albums, but no one admits to liking him/them.

I read on Politico that some bigwig political analyst thinks Ted Cruz is going to win the nomination. I'm not sure I like him any more than Trump at this point.

I think you mean Republicans.

He is a Republican and has always been one. After all, it is the party that attracts all the racists.

His popularity with white middle aged under educated Americans will ultimately hurt them.

Trump is many things but one thing he is not is politician. He may have an ego the size of pluto's moon, but he is not a politician. (That isn't to say he doesn't know how to use the system, especially with his use of eminent domain, but that in general he doesn't flat out lie about his motivations.)

It is clear that Trump has reached a certain level of success, dare I say a P.T. Barnum level of success. Despite the myths that surround him, Trump fails and he does so often. But he's no Ronda Rousey, he gets up from the occasional defeat and keeps moving up. Trump is a very simple person to read. His own ego thinks he can do a better job and thus. fed up with people who are not him, he wants to run things.

While his tactics are complex, his motivation is not. He is a god in his own mind. He honestly believes he can run the country the same way he can run his various enterprises.

I mean it's not like he did this on a whim; he has been pushed towards this direction for decades.

Again. it is his tactics that are complex. He frequently uses the same rule book as Obama (a lot of his tactics seems to be a literal reading of "Rules for Radicals"), with the exception that he often grabs things that have enough fact so as to not be caught in a bold faced lie. He focuses on populist sentiment and trust in the American spirit. (A good example is the building of the wall rhetoric, since a significant number of illegal immigrants are a result not of illegal border crossings, but of Visa overstays.) Neither the mainstream media nor the establishment of either party are capable of withstanding any pushback. Trump knows the secret mantra; all publicity is, in the end positive. The only thing that they can do to stop him is to ignore him (and they won't do that because they are that stupid). Any attack gives him free publicity which makes him stronger.

And in the end, Trump wants to be stronger.

In one of the debates, someone (Bush maybe?) was making a deal about how Trump had donated to Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, etc. and Trump responded with the best thing he's ever said in this campaign season (and something that gets very little play for obvious reasons) that he, like all rich people and businesses, donates to both parties.

He's not doing it for fun.

He's doing it to raise his brand so he can make even more money after he loses/drops out.

Look at how Palin went from relative obscurity to "celebrity". He figures if a no-nothing idiot from Alaska can turn herself into a household name; he can take his already well known brand and make it explode. He probably got upset that the Kardashians were getting to be "more famous" than he... it hurt his ego. So he has calculated he can surpass their level of fame by running. Simple math.

Celebrity? What is the color of the sky on your world? She went from being a governor of a State to the but of late night jokes, everyone quoting from comedians pretending to be her. Sarah Palin was the Governor of a State no one paid attention to. She was well compensated for that role; earning $125K/year. In that state a salary like that probably puts one in the Top 1% in the State; certainly the Top 5%. Regardless of her earnings there, she was relatively obscure from the perspective of the average American in the Lower 48.

After her failed run as VP; she did "take it on the chin" from a number of late-night comedians, pundits, and politicians. This verbal abuse was not unearned... as she is a true idiot. I don't think she's completely dumb; but I do think she was too dumb to keep her mouth shut on issues that she knew nothing about. She also believes that people and dinosaurs coexisted on this Earth; i.e. both species were living AT THE SAME TIME. That believe alone is enough reason justify some abuse from comedians.

Fast-forward to her post election persona. She is now worth an estimated $12million. She is very popular among a certain segment of our population and she is definitely a "celebrity". She had a few years of high earnings on TV and on the speaking circuit.

So yeah; I think my summary of saying she went "from relative obscurity to 'celebrity'" is accurate.

When I said he was "Republican" I was referring to what I believe his personal leanings are and have always been, and the fact that he is running for that party confirms my opinion. We all know which party favours the rich, thus their popularity with the rich, corporations, and the dumb blind followers and hangers on.

And wealth doesn't mean one is not obscure. Former Governor Pataki is still fairly well off but few people even know he is currently a candidate for president. And NEW YORK ain't Alaska.
