I had the weirdest dream last night with notyou2. This is the only time I've ever dreamed about someone on CC. Maybe this should be a thread of its own.
Anyway, notyou2 had a 25-foot Boston Whaler and asked if I wanted to take it with him to Hawaii. I said "sure," so we started out to Hawaii, and a couple hours later were close to the Big Island. However, in our way there were whitewater rapids and notyou2 said he didn't think we'd be able to make it through the rapids to get to Hawaii and he'd have to turn around and go back to the mainland. Except he made a wrong turn and we started to head straight into the rapids. Notyou2 said to hang on that we were going to push through them. So I put my life jacket on and notyou2 gunned it. Then I woke up.

We made it through, but then a water spout caught us and lifted us in the air and deposited the boat on a Japanese tuna ship that was killing dolphins and they thought we were Greenpeace and shot us.

She's only 14. Do you remember the part where the RCMP arrested you and then you making friends in prison?

I work as a donator for an irreverent billionaire. I spend all day figuring out how to spend his money. Where does that qualify on the list? Can we have a new category for DoomYoshi?

I'd say no, that's not a donation, it's a purchase, as in you're receiving something for it. If you gave the girls $40 without receiving cookies, that's a donation.
I donate nothing, I volunteer nothing; VOTE FOR ME!
Bollocks.

OH damn it saxi you made me do the math. The right hand should never know what the left hand is doing or something like that.
It's bad enough I have to fill out a worksheet for the Knights of Columbus about how many times I donated blood, went to the sick, the deceased, etc and so forth.
I don't need to be judged and I don't think you have the answers I seek ...
Why do I spend my time volunteering for groups that does not result in HOT DATES?
Well?
Why!
Why do I donate money to organizations that does not result in HOT DATES?
Oh wait, I donate to the Met Opera
And the person in the Patron Room is somewhat cute ...
I take that back.

I donate nothing, since I can barely afford to take care of myself, but I volunteer at the food bank occasionally. It started with court ordered community service, but I kept at it. It's actually not bad if you can get one of the jobs that aren't food sorting. I'd say maybe 5-6 times per year. They always send me an email around christmas and the super bowl, apparently those are their two biggest times of the year.

I donate to various charities through my mega-global-corporate employer. Usually the minimum, but always something. I never give money to the bums standing on the side of the road with a sign asking for money, though I do give them part of my lunch or a bottle of water. Chipping in for the family counts too, I have a couple relatives who are not self sufficient, I give them at least 20$ a week/month from me. For volunteering, have done the cancer walk thing and the march of dimes thing, used to be a lot more active when I lived closer to some fellow junior jaycees. Then there's the other thing that does other things. Plus, I hold the door open for strangers. This one time a feminist chewed me out for holding the door for her, but that's another story for another day

I hold the door for absolutely anyone. But partially because of my current job, everyone working there does also. It has been a very long time since I have had grief from a feminist about it. In the past it happened a few times. People returned to appreciating it around here. Often others hold the door for me. When someone is behind us I continue to hold the door for the next person or group after my wife and kids go through a door. Sometimes we have a, "after you." Stand off, I usually say, "It's ok, I'll catch up with them."
I used to volunteer quite actively for CASARA in the nineties. Much like my other flying activities getting married put the brakes on it.
I took my daughter to volunteer with me at a community kitchen during a flood in our city. They were looking for extra help to make lunches for others who volunteered to help clean up mud that had got in several thousand homes, mostly basements. Plus the police, firefighters, ems, city road crews and electrical workers that put in overtime to repair infrastructure.
As for money, I'll go with tzor's hand thing.

i don't give a cent to bums, or those guys that hit you up at the gas pump who got lost, car broke down, someone stole their wallet, and they just need to get a motel for the night til' their wife/brother/dad/friend can wire them the money.
i do give money occasionally. for instance; when i bought my driver license on line, they asked me if i wanted to donate to state parks and a few other things. well i gave the state parks a $100 dollar bill. if st. jude or texas childrens hospital would ever approach me in a way similiar to that (not face to face) i would chunk some duckets their way as well. other than that, i'm very distrustful of people and their reasons for needing money so i just give them a smug look and be on my way.
i will donate loads of my time to anyone i judge to be deserving of it. meaning, if i see a guy busting his ass to get himself out of a bind, i will stay with this guy until he is out of a bind. but if i see some pathetic wimp crying like a baby cause AAA told him they weren't coming to help him change a flat, i'll let that guy piss and moan while i go on my merry way. i will not transfer soup from a pot to a bowl for some bum that is perfectly capable of doing that himself. nor will i cook it for him.
what i would be willing to do is assemble all the necessary ingredients along with cooking utensils, directions, and heating apparatuses in a box to give to a bum so he can actually do something for himself for a change. i mean seriously. being a bum is the most pathetic form of existance i can think of. it's like saying "hey guys. look at me. i gave up on life, could you do it for me".

When I have extra monies, I'll donate to organizations that I like....animal shelters (lol)....kids' groups....
"Donate" much of my "free" time to friends / family in need.....dude's little old mom needs help, I help....neighbor needs garden rototilled (old folks), I till it. Did 20+ tax returns this year for friends and family for free....Shit like that...being the primary care giver to 2 kids, self employed and do all the house / yardwork / cooking / etc, I dont feel like I have a lot of free time.....hell....I donate most of my free time to CC....
I'm with you Dimey....have ALWAYS done the door thing....NEVER been lambasted but many folks (typically teen angst fookups or 20 somethings that are too concerned about their fucking phone) will still just walk thru and not say a fucking word. Really? A simple smile or "Thanks" is too much effort in your world? In those cases, I say "You're Welcome" fairly loudly turning what should be a pleasant encounter between strangers into an uncomfortable pissing match
