I did my sophmore research paper on surrealism.
I showed this to my class and they were horrified and rejected it.
Wondering how others felt.

It was, but it wasn't hers.

The actress in the scene was missing an eye, so they shoved a cow's eye into the socket for the effect.


All in all, wonderfully surrealist. Very Dali. I love the movie, and you can get it legally anywhere since it's in the public domain.

I just wish someone would have the guts to remaster it, or at least take some of the grain out. It's almost unwatchable due to the artifacts, threads, and other junk in the frame.

I've heard thats not true. Apparently you can freeze frame it and see that its just a shaven cow face. Its not surprising Bunuel would spread this rumor just to make it all the more controversial.

WARNING: Never star in a Dali movie. The two leads committed suicide. The girl lit herself on fire in a town square the man ODed on Veronal. Weird.

Andalucia is an autonomous community, one of 17 in Spain, in the southern part of the country. An autonomous community is not unlike regions in the United States, like New England for example.

Chien is French for dog.

As an added tidbit, the title of this movie is used in the chorus of The Pixies song "Debaser"
