On the scrounge

I will be climbing Snowdon on Saturday to raise money for charity. Me in my wheelchair and seven of the boys to help haul my arse up the 1086 metres to the summit. We've modified my spare chair into a kind of off-road rickshaw and have been training on some of the mountains around here in preparation for the challenge.

Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales and, for those of you who'd like to place it on the British Isles map, is in Gwynedd. On Saturday fifteen teams will be on the mountain, each with a wheelchair user, to raise money for the BackUp Trust. BackUp is a registered charity which helps people with spinal cord injury to regain the confidence, independence and motivation which paralysis takes away. I work voluntarily for them as a wheelchair skills trainer.

This same event last year was held on Helvellyn in the Lake District (Cumberland), and my team came in fifth place. This year we aim to come first and would like you to help us by visiting https://www.bmycharity.com/seabadgers and making a donation (cheeky, I know, but there's no harm in trying).

I've attached some pictures of us on our practice runs for you to see.

Thank you,

Rhys

Good luck, brother... And have fun!!!

That looks like a blast...

And, for some reason, you remind me of C3P0 right after he was made king of the Ewoks... *grin*

Climbing Snowdon would be hard enough to do, without doing it in a wheelchair. Good luck!

This is the path up to Pen Y Fan, the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons, about 35 miles from my house. The peak you can see is Corn Du and Pen Y Fan is just out of sight behind it.

These two are on Bwlch Y Clawdd, between the Ogmore & Rhondda valleys. 25 miles from me now, but I grew up just 2 miles down the road.

Helvellyn is 300 miles away and Snowdon is 160 miles.

Best of luck mate!

The least you could have done is give the guys a lift on the way down!

Seriously that looks hard as hell - you're a braver man than me. If it gets too hard, keep my donation and go to the pub instead!

It is hard as hell, but really exhilarating. It's a magnificent feeling being on top of a mountain again after 7 years in a wheelchair.

Cheers man.

We won!!

On Saturday morning me and 8 of the boys set out from the community centre in Llanberis and raced up to the summit of Snowdon. We got to the very top and back down in exactly 3 hours - 30 minutes faster than the team which came second.

Thank you to everyone who sponsored us.

I'll post some pictures here when I get some, in the meantime read this http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/6693933.stm

Here we are coming up one of the easier stretches on the path up Snowdon.
Image

Wonderful scenery, but we didn't hang around to take it in.
Image

We were team no.6 out of a field of 15, 3 of whom didn't start and one team's chair broke on the mountain forcing them to pull out.
Image

A quick drink and a stretch before the final nasty bit up to the summit. We'd started out from that lake visible on the left.
Image

...only 2 metres to go,
Image

Getting onto the very summit.
Image

The highest building site in Wales (they're building a new cafe) and one of the boys has got his Flashleg8 t-shirt on.

Ansawdd, diolch Alex. Roedd hi'n galed iawn, ond yn teimlad ardderchog i bod ar ben yr Wyddfa, yn enwedig gyda'r ffaith bod ni wedi curo'r Saeson hefyd. Rydyn ni'n mynd nol lan flwyddyn nesaf i amddiffyn y teitl.
