A single world government?

When playing on this site, I originate most of the games I play, so that then I am red - this way, I can imagine I'm establishing the One World Socialist Republic by revolutionary war.

But then, a couple of days ago, I had a great idea. Why not have a directly-elected parliamentary assembly at the UN - and I mean directly-elected, by the populace of the various countries of the world, not appointed by national governments.

Given that so many supranational institutions have so much power in the world (multinationals, the World Bank/IMF, etc), but are not, or are unfairly, controlled by national governments, shouldn't there be a proper, democratically-elected body that might be able to act as a check on these?

Well, blow me down, if the very next day I didn't discover that loads of other people had had the same idea, and in fact launched a campaign for the UNPA that day.

It's possible that I'm confusing the chain of events here, and that in fact I hadn't given a single thought to the idea of a UNPA until after I'd heard about the campaign...

I agree there should also be the unified currency which for those dumbasses means 1 currency for the whole world

And if that happened the world would be so much more happy because they'ld be no use for nuclear weapons as there is no countries that could have them

Well it's all nice and good. Only trouble is the UN is a bunch of toothless pussies.

I'm sorry, but that wont work. Due to each country have different PPP, and the average wages, and different economic strengths, the currency will quickly fall into disarray. People already say the Euro is failing because it covers an area which is too large(which imo isn true), but if there was once currency, it wudn work due to the povery and poornees of Africa and South America against the wealth of the west is just too great. The only reason why the dollar and euro stand strong is because most the places within their areas are of similar strength and prosperity.

I am very for a single world government. The UN would be ideal, as it already has large resources and does loads of stuff like UNICEF, peacekeeping etc... It would sort out a lot ofproblems, but create new ones like lack of soverignty, immigration, ease of trafficking people, drugs and money etc.. You'll still need checkpoints and lines of control. These could be on continental borders, but if there were none, then trafficking goods would be so easy as there would be no one to stop and search you.

I'm not sure exactly which direction you're coming from when you say that, so I'll answer as generally as I can: part of the problem with the UN is that it is effectively a collection of governments, all with varying amounts of economic bargaining power, military might, and basic legitimacy - and the Security Council is well known to have only five permanent members, and just how legitimate these members' positions are is moot.

What's proposed here is (well, eventually I think, but I still haven't quite worked it out) an additional body where each country is represented by elected representatives, more or less in line to the number of people each country has.

If each country was to have its quota freely and fairly elected, then, in theory, the body should have a lot more legitimacy than a collection of small countries which are easily bullied/bribed by the US, and whoever else.

That was hyperbole, to make you look at the thread. I do that.

They don't get along in any democratically-elected chamber. Part of the point, if you ask me.

PS: Ha, I've just seen your location. If Mr Paisley and Mr Adams can have a photograph of themselves taken with them both brightly smiling, then what heights can't be reached?

Don't you already have to recycle all your rubbish? I know I do. I never saw it as a pain in the arse, but I will, if I think you're not doing it.

Only because the US doesn't let them do shit and wont listen to them. There should be some responsibility behind being the greatest country in the world...
Talk about democracy...

Your logic is flawed; how does universal currency end nuclear armaments?

1 government is better then 300 different governments

less flags to burn and fight over

question is which government? Democrasy or Dictatorship doesnt work.Communism would require the whole world working for earth.
Socialism would always be nice.

I actually wrote an essay for International Studies a few years back on this topic... If I remember correctly I came to the conclusion that logic showed it to be a terrible idea but that I supported it anyway.

Maybe when we discover life on other planets it will give us a reason to unite against them as one big planet. But then, what would happen to all the god-believers. Is it possible that god created 2 planets? OMG ;/

Genesis 15:1 And so came the Zorgwaffles upon the Earth in their heavenly tripods, for they were created in the image of our LORD's pet.

Exactly why I can't wait for first contact any longer. This will put an end once and for all for all that religion babble. I'd rather be enslaved by a race of one-eyed-one-testicled Zorgwaffles than listen to another religion debate.
