I have long worried that after Queen Liz pops off, the popularity of the monarchy in the UK might stay high, especially if we skip a generation and install Prince Will as king - thus ensuring the monarchy's survival. Boo!

I feared that he was becoming as popular as Princess Di, what with having his mother's looks, and his PR agents helping to make him appear a caring, sharing sort of chap.

I need not have worried. It appears that he is becoming more like his simple-minded, fox-huntin', coffee-enema-advocating pranny of a father everday. Just look at what's he's wearing. Yay!

now now there is nothing wrong with the british monarchy. think of the millions they bring into this country with tourism alone. it is tradition, you do not want to end up like the frogs that got rid of their royals.

it is not his fault he has to wear clothes like that at them srt of functions. he would look a bit out of place if he had 1 of his rugby shirts on.

I've often regretted the fact that I was not born a citizen of the UK. If I had been, I'd have happily devoted my life to the kicking to the collective curb of that bunch of inbreds known as "the monarchy" but as it is, I was born an American and don't believe too strongly in much of anything. Leave the British monarchy alone. I love it, especially the Queen. I cannot even imagine Britain without the monarchs.

Btw, the Queen has political power. Not only in Great Britain but also in Australia and Canada if I am not mistaken. Once in the 70s I believe she forced the Australian Socialist Party to resign because she did not agree to some legislation. She is like a President for countries where the Prime Minister wields most power.

Palestine + years of violence = not.

2: South Africa + years of peaceful protest = end of apartheid.

ETA (basque separatists in Spain)+ years of violence = nothing.

Now please give me examples where violence has worked faster than negotiation.

I realise that was in response to Xenhu - but both of you have taken falsely-polarised positions. Fact is, good outcomes have come both from violence and peaceful protest.

Examples of violent & murderous conflicts with (arguably) good outcomes:

1. American Revolution,

2. French Revolution,

3. American Civil War,

4. Second World War.

Oh, and South Africa - the ANC were a terrorist organisation right up until the early '90's. We know, because Mrs Thatcher told us so.

That aside, the monarchy have nothing to do with anything of any import whatsoever. They open buildings and launch ships, philip makes the occasional quasi-racist gaffe, charles marries a horse and bangs on about the environment, and tourists flock to this wonderful city to point at them through the palace fence, like visitors to a zoo. I wouldn't change places with ERII or any of them for any amount of money. What they do, they do well, and they cost the british taxpayer about 50p each a year.

The embodiment of the class system, yada yada yada... look at them! centuries of inbreeding only just rescued by Diana; not a second's privacy for them or their wives/girlfriends; a bleak future consisting of impotent reigning and paparazzi; and nothing to do except join the army or pose for photos with brown people.

Leave them be, the world is more interesting with them in it, and as far as i can see there is no other criterion here.
