Thanks for starting this place. Been waiting for something like this.

For me, I was 19 years old. I was in the Marine Corps. at the time, serving in Okinawa, Japan. I believed that the whole Bible thing was a myth created by people who wanted to control others and get their $$.

My sergeant was inspecting my room one day, and struck up a conversation with me about Jesus. I basically told him where he could go (lol). He continued to talk with me over time about the scriptures and challenge me to read them for myself. So, I took him up on the challenge. He bought me a Bible and I read it. On the inside it said, "This Bible will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from this Bible". I still have it in my library today.

About a year later, I finally gave my life to Christ. I have never regretted that decision. God has given me a new life. Before, I would just do whatever I felt like and thought I was happy. But now, I have a purpose and live to serve others. What a great second chance He has given me by changing my heart.

I'm not a believer, but Christ and the Lord have brought me much happiness through my collection of reggae records. Singers like Horace Andy, Prince Far I, Yami Bolo, Morgan Heritage, Admiral Tibet and many others. One of my favourite of these albums is Psalms For I by Prince Far I, a collection of dub tracks from producers like Bunny Lee, Lloydie Slim and Lee 'Scratch' Perry with Prince Far I reading various psalms over the top. I want his version of Psalm 23 to be played at my funeral (along with Return To Sender by Elvis).

And that's just reggae. Faith has inspired some great classical and gospel music too (although christian rock sucks and it's also kind of oxymoronic).

Hey everyone,

Okay, why is it the Fish Club. I couldn't resist the pun. Fishers of men, yes, but also in honor of the first priest that I can consciously recall Father Fisher. So I guess it should be the Fisher's Club. Anyway Father Fisher was a calm man, never raised his voice in a sermon. Sermons were always thought provoking and short. But my main memory was walking into his office. It was like walking into a library or a college professor's office, Wall-to-wall books from every perspective.

Two other thoughts about Father Fisher and then I'll move on. As a child, I took pipe cleaners and fashioned a crucifix for him. I didn't think anything of it, but that dusty crucifix was still on his wall while I was in college. That was a demonstration of Christian love that stuck with me. Second When I was in college a non-Christian friend and I stopped by to talk with Father Fisher. We sat outside the church and talked and after a while a yellow jacket started flying around us, if you aren't familiar with them they are about the nastiest and most agressive type of wasp around here. Well this yellow jacket landed on Father Fisher's foot and walked right up his pants leg. He calmly looked down and said "Stop that" the bee instantly turned around and walked back to his foot. Then he said "Now go away". It flew away like it had heard him. I just laughed, but my friend's jaw literally dropped open. I thought well we aren't moving mountains today, but I guess we can start with bees.

When he died, Mrs. Fisher asked me to be the acolyte at his funeral. I hadn't been to church since I was sixteen. I told myself I was too busy. The truth was I was too lazy, and was well on the way to becoming an alcoholic in my college days. I was honored, and I saw how many people came to the funeral. The cathedral was full. He was the vicar of a very small church. If we had a hundred people on Christmas, we were really rocking. But his words and actions went beyond that and touched so many lives. I think that helped guide me back. I wanted to be a part of that.

Thanks for your views my friend. I couldn't think of better choices. I've always been fond of Kansas. It's not really Christian rock, but the message is there, and I always liked hearing it in mainstream music like that.

Hey fellow believers! I love hearing the testimonies of what God has done in people's lives. He is so awesome! I became a Christian at 13. Haven't always stayed on the straight and narrow path. Been through some rough times, yet God has always remained faithful even when I wasn't. Good to see this thread! Look forward to good discussions here.

My friend, I'm afraid I have to confess ignorance of the Greek. I know that ichthys is fish. But yes the pun goes on, The sign of the fish was used when we had to go underground in Rome to have our meetings. So I guess thats a little of the meaning, as well, but I don't feel particularly persecuted and have no interest in persecuting anyone else. So it was mainly a way to use a Christian symbol in tribute to a man who had inspired me.

I became a chirstian when I was six, I know many people look back and think that they weren't really saved the first time (especially when it happens to be so young) But I'm fourteen now and have looked back several times and I think I really did get saved.

I've sincerely enjoyed my walk with the Lord, I've made many mistakes (especially recently) but the Lord has and will see me through even when I'm not loyal to him by sinning. My favorite aspects of being a christian are debate and leading others to the saving knowledge and love of Christ.

Should be something along these lines if I remember correctly.

Iesous Christos = Jesus Christ (easy)
Theou Yios = Son of God
Soter = Saviour

Great thread I'm sick of all the negative this religion sucks that religion is stupid.

So heres my story although its only just beginning...

Basically I grew up a Christian, believing in Jesus and God, because both my parents did. I went to church and we sang had prayers went to Sunday school it was all really fun.

Then when I was 7 we moved. My parents set about finding us a new church to go to. There were several I were several that were alright, but most were very formal with no sunday school. I was really annoyed when my parents chose one of those for us to go to reguarly. We were the only children there at first. And our family of 4 almost doubled the congregation. But they decided to set up a sunday school for us and gradually more and more people came. The services began to change we sung more lively songs and read less and less from "The Green Book" I still no loads of it it off by heart and its years since we used it.

Eventually the sunday school was too big to fit into the tiny church vestry and we had to move to the villiage hall! Now we have 3 groups bursting at the seems and we are looking to use the local school so we can fit us all in. Beyond our wildist dreams. God is Great!

Anyway back to my story. some of the people who joined early on told us about this great Christian Conference Flames of Fire (Now New Wine Cymru) so we went it was great just what we needed a change from the litergy. But it wasnt till I moved up to the teenage section that I began to realise what Jesus had done for me. The hundreds of teenagers all fired up for the Lord, the atmosphere was amazing. It was then that I first felt Gods power in me, I realised that God had a plan for me for little old ME so I commited Jesus and last year followed in Jesus' footsteps by getting baptised. I was amazed all of my non-christian friends came, and all were touched by the service. I'm sure this is only the beginning... I'm only 14 after all

The name Ichthus (meaning fish), comes from the Greek Iota, Chi, Theta, Upsilon, and Sigma or IXOYE (in roman script). This is an acronym for Iesous Christos, Theou Yios (or Uios), Soter meaning "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour".
It was also handy as you said before "Jesus was a fisher of men".
Early Christianity was outlawed in Rome, so to know Christians when you met them one would draw a fish and the other would dot the eye. A sort of "masonic handshake" if you will.

Wow, it's really encouraging coming in here and reading all the testimonies. Praise God.

I have a question: does anyone know of any good Christian organizations where I could volunteer and help people? Last summer, I went down to Mexico and helped build houses for some folks down there. It was fantastic because I never get a chance to build anything, and I learned a lot. I also got a chance to practice my Spanish with the locals and we had lunch together. The best part was when we got to hand the keys to the families that we built the houses for!

I want to repeat this experience and help more. Perhaps there are Christian organizations which specialize in helping build/construct houses for those who need them?
