Conquer Club

Since this is a website dedicated to the art of world domination though I’d find out what your favorite war films are. Not necessary the best/most realistic war flicks - just the ones you like the most. It can be any era and doesn't necessarily have to be directly about war - but it has to be set or revolve in some way about war (Hell, it’s my thread so it’s my rules!).

It's too hard to just pick one - so I'll let you have a top three.

P.S. Say why you like it and if it’s obscure tell us what war it’s set in at least!)

Mine:

1) Apocalypse Now (The best Vietnam film in my opinion)

2) Empire of the Sun (Fantastic film about a boy in a Japanese POW camp in WW2 – Spielberg’s finest hour)

3) The Good the Bad and the Ugly (Cheaty a bit I know but it’s in the American Civil War, and Sergio Leone is a genius!)

1= braveheart my family is scottish so it was nice to put one over the english even though he was betrade they should of followedhim.
2= the great escape fantastic film, the things they tried to do to escape. steve macqueen brilliant.
3= henry V the one with lawerance olivier or kenneth brannagh there just as good. out numbered 4-1 by the french we kicked there sorry arses in france.
ther is many many more. lawrence of arabia just missed out and ZULU.

Braveheart & any other of Mel Gibson's movies

My favorite is "The Blue and the Gray" It is an old American Civil War movie from the 80's. It's about 4 hrs long, but it's worth it. It's very accuarate in its historical detail. It's very graphic, they don't hold any of the realities concerning blood and gore back, and the acting is superb. Very entertaining. One of the few movies that got me to shed a tear.

Zulu.

I love Saving Private Ryan, because of all the stars in it and the story, and i liked the war part of Pearl Harbor, but the love story part was not my favorite. The Patriot was also really good. I heard that Flags of Our Fathers was good from my brother. Has and one seen Letters from Iwo Jima? I heard it was really good.

Kellys Heroes,(donald sutherland was brilliant).The killing Feilds(harrowing and a true story)but my all time favorite was Das Boot.german film about the U boats(claustrophobic and such a sad ending even though your following the germans)a must see

...Platoon, perhaps. Actually, these shouldn't all be lumped together, because they're so different. Never mind. I'm sure there's many others. Come to think of it, "Attack!" was on TV today, but I didn't know until I got to work, otherwise I'd have set the video.

Keep meaning to see Das Boot, but have never got around to it in 15 years. I only hope it's as good as everyone says it is, otherwise, I'll be disappointed...

The Great Escape, certainly.

I'm also a huuuuge fan of Ran (Kurosawa samurai adaptation of King Lear). I was just watching it the other day. Beautiful, amazing film.

The third? Hmmmmm. I'd have to go with Full Metal Jacket (altho I almost went with Dr. Strangelove on the 'well, it is a movie about war, just a very weird one' exemption)[/i]

Enemy at the gate - was hooked as soon as i sarted watching it

and i watched the end of a film set in veitnam about a news reporter for the war. ended with them walking out of a city singing that mickey mouse song and him saying "i no longer fear death because i have witnessed hell today"

That's Full Metal Jacket. You should watch the whole thing.

Oh, I forgot about that one. It's not a favourite of mine or anything, but I had read "Stalingrad" a while before I saw this, and this film really brought what I'd read in that book to life - although some people say the film isn't accurate or realistic (what war film is? I dunno, never been in a war) as long as you accept the dramatic licence, it's fine.

I hadn't realised how many war films I'd seen until I posted in this thread. Never realised what a war-monger I am.

Joan of Arc: The Messenger

Its got historical accuracy from the costumes and haircuts, to the size of the armies, plus some strong acting and a good story.

Its the Welsh blood in me. Cheesey, but excellent.


Nng, can't pick between The Great Dictator, The Great Escape, and Lawrence of Arabia.

Beyond the battle scenes, Braveheart is awful - virtually nothing right about it. The Patriot and Kingdom of Heaven suffer from the same thing.

The Longest day, but nobody will watch it with me.
