Central America

what is it defined as?

Question arose because my phyics teacher found a globe and started asking us geog questions:

Mr. S. "Where is Nicuagria"
Me "Central America"
Mr. S "No. Not Really"
Me "Yeah it is"
Mr. S "Hmm"
Me "The thin bit!"
Mr. S "would you call that Cental America?"
Me "Yeah"
Mr. S. "I Know that bits Nrth and that bit is South but.. ok Whatever... ( Puts Globe Down we get on with work)

If you know the region, central america is defined as the 7 following countries: Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama.

Here´s a map.

The geographic center on America is located in a part of Guatemala named "Cuilapa, Santa Rosa"

Guatemala to Panama is Central America, but I believe this area is also technically North America, insomuch that you buy into the idea of continents.

Where did your teacher think Central America was? Or--where did she think Nicaragua was?

I'm guessing since it was a Physics teacher the answer was perhaps to do with the position of the tectonic plates. If so then the above poster is correct (I'm pretty sure) this is in the North American continental plate. Central America is more a geopolitical term.
