If you liked 1984 you should check out Welcome to the Monkey House by Jack Kerouac. There are some short stories in there that could so easily come true.

Didn't Apple make a commercial in which Microsoft was "Big Brother" in Nineteen Eighty-Four and Apple a rebel?

I hope that they don't 'forget' to include an off button.

A little late isn't it?
And I believe the guy who owns Apple (I forget his name) gave a live speech where he tricked Bill Gates into looking like Big Brother or something along those lines. I think the original commercial was aimed at some other company (Drawing a blank on the name.)

The big brother part was the pact that Microsoft and Apple did in 1999.

If 1984 was coming in any country first, it has to be in the UK, here are some facts -
- The UK owns 20% of the world's CCTV cameras.
- On average, you are captured on camera over 300 times a day in London.
- There is one camera for every 14 people.
Not only does cameras know when and where you are, Bank Machines record when and where you used it, Loyalty Cards in supermarkets for example record what you buy and when, and Cable TV records what you watched and for how long.

In Britain they've also started attaching microphones to CCTV cameras to make sure you're not talking about anything inappropriate (still being trialled) and some CCTV camera setups allow the operator to communicate with those being watched.

Woww some serious garve digging going on here, this thread was over a year old...
Anyways the US has its share of 1984esqueness as well with our wonderful president doing everything in his ability to get warrantless wiretapping legal.

I don't know why I always transpose those two. Very different authors both very good though.
