Meat tastes good, has protein, and there's a fairly limitless supply of it. What's not to like?

these things are all AGRARIAN. in my understanding, not all vegetables (or the plants that they come from) can be grown year round, and are especially hard to grow and farm around the winter, cold, and dry spells. meat is available all year round, and is the most abundant, rich, and reliable source of several key nutrients. i also recall that bees seem to be vanishing from commercial hives, and the population itself is half what it used to be 25 years ago. i also know that almonds' pollination depend almost entirely on bees.

You cant be serious... maybe you havent taken high school biology... A plant lacks a central nervous system and thus the ability to comprehend pain. Not even that thats the reason I dont eat meat.

So it would be fine to kill a cow if it was on morphine? All im saying is that all acts of preparing food include the death of some substance. Im not saying being a vegetarian is wrong, but plants are also dying just like animals. What you said isbasically what i said roundaboutly earlier: just because it doesnt scream makes it okay to kill it?

I do believe your the one who fails to see logic. Many people here have given several sound reasons why eating meat is helpful, and morally acceptable and all you've been able to do is spout the same response over and over again. Obviously Meat eating is sustainable on this planet, as long as we continue breeding and raising cows the way we are right now.

True, if we continue going at the rate we are now it may be unsustainable, but with the advances in technology it soon might not be the case. With all the research into cloning, it would be quite simple to keep the chain going. Not saying that my prefered choice would be a cloned animal, but it is a path that could work.

Thanks Dmunster for actually getting some numbers.
Unsustainable!

Plus if you want I could start getting into the drugs and hormones they pump into the animals.. or the fact that they feed cows dead cow in amongst the grain they are fed (quick biology lessons, cows are NOT supposed to eat grains or other dead cows.. they eat grass.. but that alone doesn't fatten cows up quick enough for the human meat mincing machine, so they feed them foreign foods) How do you think Mad Cow disease started??

quick question -- do you think they way humans breed and raise cows in the way they do at the moment is humane or ethical? How about we raise you up on a cow ranch, pumped full of drugs, and then sent off to be slaughtered at 11 months old. And chickens, shit, they're treated worse. Anyone who buys caged eggs over free range eggs is an asshole.

I really don't see much of a difference between raising cows for slaughter and exterminating a termite infestation. In both cases, animals die. Only difference is that said animals are put to perfectly productive use in the former case.

I always wondered why many people are so concerned over treatment of animals when human beings are treated very much like trash in many places of the world. Sorry, but the human race is priority #1 in my book.

i doubt hell that we've ever raised cattle and other fodder "humanely". i just don't think we can afford to feed cattle the way a human would be fed. as for slaughter, most of the methods used to slaughter cattle (approved by the USDA) include captive bolt, gunshot, and the use of electricity. all three of these methods are used in order to induce immediate unconsciousness before butchering. don't ever try to use "how would you like it if.." argument. you can use that similar argument pertaining to the care-taking of dogs. how would you like to eat the same dry dog food everyday that uses the parts of animals deemed unfit for humans, and water that is never really clean or safe for you? and you can never keep up proper hygiene, etc. so don't use THAT typical vegetarian argument.

eh... i've done it again

I can't be bothered with a vegetarian/carnivore debate because people are generally divided and will obviously stick up for their side of the argument no end. I do feel that I have more perspective as I ate meat for 19 years before turning vego, but whatever.

The point of this whole thread was fast food, but then again I probably relate the two very closely so maybe it is the same argument --

and yes humans are treated like shit throughout the world so it's kinda hard to even begin thinking about animal rights when we can't even get human rights sorted out, but doesn't mean I'm not going to atleast try to do my bit. I don't eat meat, I'm not a rascist, homophobe or misogynist -- maybe i'm just a 'PC faggot' (which i have been called countless times) -- maybe i care too much

the same could be said that you're ignoring my arguments.. you didn't say a word about the amount of water used to produce one pound of beef compared to wheat or grain.

Also, when it comes down to it, diet is rather arbitrary -- i really don't care that much whether you eat meat or not. I'm not part of PETA or Animal Liberation or anything like that. I just choose to live my life inflicting the least amount of oppression possible. I say least because it's practically impossible short of making your own clothes and stuff.. everyone's shoes, tshirts, pants etc were all made in sweat shops (unless you made an effort to find something that specifically states 'sweatshop free') -- I'm just pointing my idea of vegetarianism and how by avoiding meat you instantly avoid a whole lot of massive evil corporations and they no longer get your money -- plus its more sustainable for the earth

There is no fresh water shortage. People are not starving globally whilst i shove pounds of factory farmed meat into my face. I can do nothing to assist in the plight of others less fortunate than I. I am a mindless robot and will consume anything said to be good by my lord, the TV.

Man, how am I the only person to choose Sonic?!?!?!

Of course, when I lived in Ohio, there were no Sonics, so I'd have to say that my favorite restaurant up there was probably Ryans... Although I guess it is a buffet.

I could say the same exact thing to you. Us "meat eaters" have brought up countless points in that we can continue to eat meat and continue to replenish that supply. Face it, if we didnt have the ability to domesticate animals for their meat, a majority of countries around the world would undergo starvation.Alot of countires have an inability to grow a harvest that would be able to feed their population because of their climate, and rely on meat sources. As i said before, go ahead and be vegeatrian, but dont come up with bullshit excuses like "we are hurting the cows" or "we'll run out of cows to eat" because when they're gone, there are still other animals we can eat. Be a vegeatrian because you dont want to eat meat, its that simple of a response.

When did anyone say we will run out of cows? That is obviously not the point. I am not talking about people living in third world countries who are lucky to have 3 squares. I am talking about you wasting the finite ammount of fresh water and soil nutrients that are fed to a single cow which could be put to more efficent uses such as raising soy beans that could be made to taste like any type of food you can think of. You are either stupid or selfish, take your pick. If you think your meat habbit isnt doing damage to an already fragile ecosystem that my kids have no choice but to inhabit then think again son.

But meat is so full of sweet sweet yummyness. When your children taste meat for the first time, living in the blighted ash-deserts of the future, they too will realise how good it tastes. I'm pretty sure that at that precise moment they'll forgive me (and other carnivores) for destroying the ecosystem (which isn't yummy at all) and embrace the joyous lifestyle of the meat-glutton.

Remember: Nature is just one big picnic.
