Secretary Azar Declares Public Health Emergency in United States

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex M. Azar II declared a public health emergency for the entire United States to aid the nation’s healthcare community in responding to 2019 novel coronavirus.

“While this virus poses a serious public health threat, the risk to the American public remains low at this time, and we are working to keep this risk low,” Secretary Azar said. “We are committed to protecting the health and safety of all Americans, and this public health emergency declaration is the latest in the series of steps President Trump has taken to protect our country.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working closely with state health departments on disease surveillance, contact tracing, and providing interim guidance for clinicians on identifying and treating coronavirus infections. HHS is working with the Department of State to assist in bringing home Americans who had been living in affected areas of mainland China. HHS divisions also are collaborating with industry to identify and move forward with development of potential diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics to detect, prevent, and treat 2019-nCoV infections.

In declaring the public health emergency, Secretary Azar acted within his authority under the Public Health Service Act. This declaration is retroactive to January 27, 2020.

So he admits that American has been in a state of emergency since Monday and yet his agency did nothing about it until today.

the selective reading continues..

the --> declaration <-- of the emergency was signed today. it is retroactive to Monday the 27th because Monday the 27th is when they started doing something about the emergency .. genius..

The Trump Administration is advising any Americans who have not yet been able to evacuate from China to begin stocking up on food and other essentials in event of the total collapse of the Chinese state.

"We strongly urge U.S. citizens remaining in China to stay home as much as possible and limit contact with others, including large gatherings. Consider stocking up on food and other supplies to limit movement outside the home," a security alert posted by US Mission China on Monday notes.

"In the event that the situation deteriorates further, the ability of the U.S. Embassy and Consulates to provide assistance to U.S. nationals within China may be limited," it says.

What I don’t understand is the fear surrounding the virus. Doesn’t the flu kill more people then Coronavirus?

The virus is “scary” to dumb people because it has a catchy name.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy the WHO and the CDC and other governmental agencies are doing their jobs to help slow the spread of this and research how it started and how we can best treat those infected. The general public on the other hand losing their minds over it is ridiculous.

30 years ago this wouldn’t have a name, and we all would have just thought it was some version of the flu, or that it was a bad flu season. Now because of genetic testing the scientists can identify the gene and give it a name... and the media can run with it.

To date 724 people have died of this specific virus...if we prorate that over a year, the number maybe jump to 7-10K.
(Depending on how it plays out... obviously there are still unknowns and it could be worse or not so bad.)

The “Flu” on the other hand kills about 50K people a year worldwide.

Automobile accidents kill 1.25million people a year worldwide.

I was taking about flying to South Carolina in April and people are saying things to me like “Aren’t you worried bad out Coronavirus?” or “There may be travel bans if this gets worse.”. Yes... that’s true... it’s also true I could break my leg five minutes after I book my flight and then I’d have to cancel. Yeah... I’d postpone a Chinese trip right now, but worry about South Carolina in April? Crazy.

I’m WAY WAY WAY more likely to die in a car accident. No one says.... “maybe you should cut down on your driving, it’s super dangerous”.

If I was a conspiracy believer I’d suggest that the Government and Media are in cahoots and stuff like this is just an attempt to distract us while they steal our freedom and empty our wallets!

Welcome back Alex!

The difference is that the flu kills the old, young and weak. When SARS came, it was killing strong adults and had a mortality rate of 10%. The new virus isn't like that (it's mostly killing the old, just like the flu, with a lower mortality rate). Yet, one of the greatest fears in the medical community is a "new" virus that we are not prepared to deal with, mutating and killing people. It would need to spread rapidly before detection (this is what happened in Wuhan) but would also need to be really deadly (this has not happened).

This data is exaggerated... look at worldwide fatalities. The percentages are about half.

If it hits an area that has limited medical resources hard, then the few resources they have break... and people who need care don’t get it and die.

i.e. people who are borderline and get severe cases but would survive with fever reduction medicine and intravenous fluids... if these people don;t get care they die at a higher rate.

In countries with decent access to healthcare the death rate is lower, and will remain lower so long as we SLOW the spread. We can’t stop the spread... it’s not possible. We can slow the spread... and by doing that we reduce the strain on the healthcare system, enabling them to take care of those who do need support.

... also hygiene.

Half of which number? All of them?

If you have more up-to-date data, I wouldn't mind seeing it. So far every article I read aggregated the age groups together and didn't separate them.

The WHO said COVID-19 is killing 3.4% of people infected. Given that's 3.4% across all age groups, the stats in Duk's picture sound perfectly plausible.

Those numbers are right...I was looking at one specific age group and misread...

Shooting from the hip.

My other comments are valid...and I agree it’s worse for age group.

What this doesn’t show is existing health issues...

That .4% in my age group... do the vast majority of those that die have pre-existing conditions.
Other data seems to bear this out... but there’s no specific data that shows both factors on one graph.
