The two are completely different...it's like asking which is better: basketball, hockey, football (either one), baseball, track and field, etc.
It's a moot point. It's strictly dependant on where and how one was raised and flavored with a sprinkle of personal taste.
Personally, I find American style football and basketball to be the most enjoyable on the tube and baseball games to be the most enjoyable in person (the nostalgic emotions I get from Wrigley Field makes me biased admittedly!).
European football (soccer) hasn't really caught on in the US because it's like hockey...on tv, it's boring as hell to watch. When that observation is coupled with the fact that the majority of the American public is basically illiterate on both the rules and history of the sport (re: soccer), and what you get is a general apathetic view. In time, that will probably change, but I doubt I'll live to see it. Until then, GO BEARS!
