They likely did want to avoid casualties.

In part this did demonstrate their capabilities. It also demonstrates the fact that they don’t want to escalate the violence because they know they have significantly more to lose in a serious conflict.

We could use this to help move negotiations along and withdraw from the region... but that’s not likely to happen.

After decades of ambiguity about the Iranian military, their capabilities are now on exhibit for the world.

And the world can now see that spending 40 years trying to DIY 1970s weapons tech isn't a great approach to build up one's military.

Of course, this should have surprised no one. This is the last country in the world that's still operating 50 year old F-14s ... and not just operating it, it's the lynchpin of their air defense. Iran may actually be committing a crime against world heritage. Those aircraft are now valuable archaeological relics that should be preserved in a museum.

Well I don't care at all about what happens to Israel. But as for the oil fields, you raise a good point. This is why I think the U.S. should ringfence North American petroleum with a No Export/Import agreement with Canada and Mexico; neither country could export oil elsewhere and neither could import from anywhere other than the others. This would keep the price of oil in North America insulated from instability.

Anyway, speaking of Canada, now even dumb Trudeau thinks the Iranians themselves shot down the Ukrainian airliner because they're so utterly incompetent ---

There’s no way we lose militarily.

The Iranian offensive capability would be wiped out quickly and their country and economy would be devastated.
There’s no way you can dispute that.

Where we would lose. is when we went in on the ground to ‘clean up’ and when we tried to install a puppet government or fight door-to-door in the cities. We aren’t prepared (no current major power) is prepared to do what it takes to occupy and stop insurgent activities... and the American people aren’t prepared to occupy some place for decide where our boys just keep coming home in body bags.

So in that case...yeah we lose... but so doesn’t Iran.

I doubt that anyone shut down the plane mainly because we are talking about Boeing.

There are multiple videos on the net showing the plane being hit by a missile or that the plane was burning for a minute before crashing but I can't believe them both since its highly unlikely that someone would be in the correct place and recording in the correct time.
