Oh, and back to the actual topic of this thread...

As has been mentioned multiple times, there are tons of good wines out there, and you showing off your amazing palate and extremely good taste by picking the trendiest, most highly thought of one in creation isn't really the point of a good gift, now is it? When gifting wine, I find that it's nice to give something more representative of something meaningful. Get a wine that's vintage is the year you started dating, or her birthday. Did you have a wonderful trip together to Oregon? A regional bottle to drink while reminiscing about that experience might be the ticket. Does she dream of going to Northern Italy? You get the point. You're best to narrow your search in that manner rather than just on the tastes of some clowns (no offense clowns) in a forum.

Good suggestions. If we had been dating longer than we have, I would definitely go for the year. Alas. She's of Sicilian descent, so the geography thing is definitely a good idea if I can find something. I appreciate everyone's suggestions, and want to keep seeing them.

As far as other alcohol goes (hijacking my own thread?) I'm a vodka man myself. I have to be in the mood to get into a good bourbon (SoCo does not agree with me unfortunately). I really want to like whiskey, but I just can't do it generally. So some Grey Goose to start me off and then it's always nice to finish off the night with some tequila. I actually got into some mezcal last night, but decided I was too drunk to chance getting to and eating the larva.

Good Sicilian wines are usually Marsala, which is generally served as an early course with cheeses, or as a dessert wine. Alternatively, you could be pretty impressive by cooking with Marsala. There are some excellent recipes out there, and if you need one, I might even share one of mine. I still think, that if you work at it and try to make it personal in some way, you'll score huge points.

Grey Goose for $50 in the US?? Nooo, $30.

It's just a wee bit more expensive than Bombay Sapphire, my top shelf liquor of choice.

Let's switch places. You can have my American citizenship if I can have your French.

EDIT: Wait, maybe your British, not French. That'd be fine, too.

Standard liquor bottle size.

Though, my standard is mostly plastic gallon jugs that cost about $15. Except when it comes to gin, of course.

Gallon jugs for $15 bucks? I wonder whether it would burn a hole in the floor if you poured it on the ground!! ;)

Actually, they're half gallons. I guess that makes quite a difference.

You can get about a gallon of Mr. Boston for about ten to twelve bucks. But I'm pretty sure that stuff is just isoproponol repackaged as vodka...

It's really not true. Generally speaking with regards to neutral spirits, like vodka, unless you're drinking it straight no mixer, 99.99% of the population can't tell the difference between brands, and even straight it can be tough. Check the blind tests. Purchasing top shelf brands of vodka and mixing them is basically just ego masturbation. I consider the fact that people consider Absolut vodka to be a 'good' vodka is one of the greatest marketing triumphs ever. I'd much rather have rail than that, and I drink for free.

I do drink my vodka straight, preferably on the rocks. What's wrong with Absolut? I wouldn't consider it to be the best but it's definitely better than Boston.

I'd love to, but you just wear a burka and turn up at the police office demanding a passport, they'll give you that and family allocations.

As for the mixed spirits, you can tell the difference, obviously, but as caleb says its rare people can. Remeber cocktails flourished during prohibition as a means to mask poorly made "moonshine" stuff with fruity aromas.
