I certainly dont hate americans.

A few that are highly publicised are annoying, but most yanks are just like any normal brit, albeit without as good a sense of humour.

You're not the first country to use torture either... does that make it OK?

Are those criticising America (from, for example, Britain) stating that they're proud of the colonial past? I, for one, am not.

In this day and age, more than at any point in the past, a greater recognition of the rights of the individual, of sovereignty, of the 'practices' of war... a greater transparency through media... we have an elected body, the UN, to help us combat such crimes (a body the US played a big part in, let me remind you)... Theoretically it should be more 'wrong' than ever before to act in such a manner.

I totally agree, If Britain had not been colonial in the past, we wouldnt have so many leeching vagrants to accomodate now.

While I don't condone the US's foreign policy the UN honestly doesn't do much. They basically spend all their time making suggestions and patting each other on the back for being so awesome.

Actually they DO do a hell of a lot. In aid, health, the environment... they're a major world force.

Unfortunately the foreign policy aspect requires the countries involved to be committed to supporting joint efforts, and abiding by resolutions - something which the US hasn't quite got the hypocritical hang of. The UN shouldn't have to stop the major players. They should agree to abide by its decisions, not just pick and choose.

Most of France has been victim of systematic ecervelleation by a bolsho-socialist mediatic totalitarianism. I know many French people (not that they are representative of the general populace, just they frequent the similar right wing circles I do) that admire America and neo-liberalism. So to all Americans filled with righteous anger at us, I will say :
forgive them, they know not what they do

... I have to agree. I just came back (well, 2 months ago) from 10 years abroad and I'm pretty apalled at both the lack of knowledge and the lack of interest in the rest of the world by most people I know here (I don't mean to imply that I see myself as any manner of expert, but I am very interested).

... I think it's a combination of factors. Certainly not the least of these is the public education system.

... Then, you have to consider our exposure to world news and the "typical" American reaction. What's going on now in Pakistan is a perfect example. CNN, FOX, whatever, will have a very brief report on Mussarif's (sp?) crackdowns before launching into a more detailed story of how the Bush Administration has been supporting Mussarif for years... And then it gets political... and that's it. The Pakistan problem becomes a story about George Bush. <edit: and so I suppose the media plays a large role here as well>.

... And then there's the whole "We are the center of the world" mentality ..

... And lastly, a lot of us are just too busy, or too damned lazy to find things out on our own.

... At least that's my take on it.

EvilPurpleMonkey wrote:I hate almost all Americans (From the USA, Not Mexico, not Canada.). First the conservatives f*ck up Iraq, now if the liberals come into power, the US is totally fucked because terrorists will swarm in there and the liberals demand that we leave. Plus they screwed up their economy, and the economy's of a lot of there trade partners, and from my experience, the majority of Americans are either stupid, or don't care. That's my opinion. A lot of my friends aren't on friendly terms with the US either. But you got some allies.

Ok, to start, most people who say that they hate Americans don't know Americans. Now I'm going to guess, since you are Canadian, that you have had some contact with Americans, but apparently not enough. When most people watch news, or read about America, they are not seeing the vast majority of Americans who are: a.) fed up with the government in power, and/or b.) well-educated and know what they are talking about. Granted we to have a significant amount of idiots in this country, but what else could you expect in such a highly populated country. Not to mention, the south is a bit worse than the north as far as education goes (but maybe I'm biased).

Now I'm going to take a wild shot in the dark here and say that since you don't live in this country, you aren't quite up to date with politics here. So let me say this. If "liberals", (I'd rather use the term democrats because they are not all completely liberal) come into power, I can assure you that terrorists will not swarm into America. Terrorists exist because they are mad at America, its culture, and its policies. A few security checkpoints aren't going to stop them. And I believe that the Iraq war has clearly demonstrated that neither will war. In fact, war will have the opposite affect. Conservatives like the country to believe that they are strong on national security - but where else has their policies gotten us besides fear? Under what political group did 9/11 occur under? Republican. It is clear that the Republican way of controlling national security is not working, and furthermore, it is infringing upon basic human rights and freedoms.

As I stated above, terrorists are mad at America's culture and policies. With culture, neither party can really change that. As for policies, that can be changed, and with that change, there will hopefully be a change in the number of terrorist groups or organizations downward. I acknowledge that terrorists will always exist, but with a change in policy, one can hope the the dominance, presence and importance of terrorist organizations can be reduced.

In regards to the "most Americans don't care" part...unfortunately, that is generally true. Just look at our pathetic voter turnout rate.

Finally, no one is going to demand that you leave your country.
