The bit where you said you'd like them to win but they won't?

Yes, a movie you said you liked but predicted wouldn’t win, won.

Well that isn't fully true. My prediction was get out from over a month before nominations were even announced. Once the nominations were announced, I expressed that my secondary pick was Shape of Water. I never negatively predicted it, just failed to predict it. It was a great movie. Get Out is one of those movies that sits with you for days and weeks after you've seen it though. Shape of Water is just a great 2 hours at the theater. I'm more happy for Guillermo than for the movie itself.

I actually used that line to get a refund on several bets I placed last time I went to a sporting event. Shit was so cash.

I honestly thought Get Out was a bit weak overall. It seemed like an 'okay' film that capitalized on the whole #OscarsSoWhite thing from last year. Kind of like how Wonder Woman was a fairly average film whose release coincided with a wave of feminist activism in Hollywood.

Honestly I bet the makers of Shape of Water are kicking themselves that they didn't think to have the sea monster extort his girlfriend for sex in return for employment, cause then they would have swept the board.

I think of Get Out as more of a surrealist film though. If you think about it rationally (which would make sense given the political elements) it fails. But as a total mindfuck it works a lot better. It's like Jordan Peele is playing a joke on his audience and yet it still works as a psychological horror movie.

I'm not sure how to interpret that last comment. At the moment it's reading to me as 'if you treat Get Out as being total nonsense then you'll enjoy it'.

Get Out was ok. It's just that everybody is so tired of the same old stuff being done in the same repetitive way that Get Out stands out as something original. But it's just ok. It Follows is better than Get Out in that regard (original/horror).

Exactly. The last quarter of the movie makes no sense whatsoever, it's one of the worst plots in the history of storytelling. When treated as surrealism, it becomes delicious.

I've got It Follows on my Netflix queue. I don't know too many people who like rater R horror movies though, so it might be a while before I watch it.
