lol. Agreed. They're still needlessly more expensive.

EDIT->> MAC laptops that is.

A good macbook with 2gb of ram a fast processor and 80gb harddrive is only like 2-300 more than a pc one and it operates way better.

Can you quantify, or at the least qualify, this statement. How does a mac operate better? Is what you really meant...

"A good macbook with 2gb of ram a fast processor and 80gb harddrive is only like 2-300 more than a pc one and the case looks much nicer."

Why do you say this? I am about to get a laptop from school and was wondering what I should get.

Macs are better, that is admittable, but their desktops cost so much compared to PC's and the extra isn't worth it, but macbooks are comparable in price to pc's.

Ask yourself a few simple questions:

- Do most of the people I know use macs or pcs? As having the same will make life a lot easier...
- Am I expecting to make use of lots of Microsoft applications; word, excel, powerpoint etc as if so although you can use these on a mac having a pc will make life much easier...
- What does your school use as standard as using the same will make school life a lot easier...
- Which type will allow me to get the best hardware configuration for my money? If you can spend the same and have an extra half gig of ram, or a dual core processor, or a better graphics cards then go with which ever option provides the best opportunity.
- Which will let me most easily upgrade the components as my needs, or the demands of the applications I use daily, change?

Do not ask yourself:

- On the outside which one looks nicer?
- Which is it cooler to own?

I just watched the link and was amused to see all the stereotypes I drew in my posts above reflected there, they are so true.

However, whether you are a right-clicka or iBook flicka please for the love of God use Firefox to browse the internet. There isn't that much wrong with IE7 admittedly but Firefox is more usable and if you get your hands dirty with the about:config options you can make it soo much faster... Lets not brush to close to Safari in case some of its ineptitude rubs off. I am a great admirer of a lot of Apple software but Safari is without doubt the worst browser on the market, you'd be better off with Opera and that is really saying something!

Again can you qualify this? Thats like me saying Reeses Pieces are better than Super Sour Skittles (they are, only just, but they are, and thats beside the point) its not really very definitive without some evidence to substantiate the claim.

Good Point.

However, every computer technology class, and indeed, anywhere on campus at the local college uses Dell Desktops or Gateways (I think) without exception as I remember.

I use PCs, Dell FYI. Only had it for two years now. Or is that three.....

Anyway, let's continue.

No, this was a good point in the 90s it is no longer relevant. See my previous post. You could argue that macs are more optimised for color accuracy but that is practically irrelevant unless your working in the print world.

If I had to choose one it'd reluctantly be PC as they do everything reasonably well. But I'd much rather have the choice of both because some things are just far easier to do on a Mac than on a PC IMO.

Let's party, I've never been advanced enough to use linux, but I had it on my ipod for a while.

That's the thing. I have a mac (my mothers computer, actually) as she does a LOT of work with professional printing (magazine ads, ect.) and so mac is for her. Vincent M does a lot of work with video and uses final cut pro, so mac is for him. If you want to play a lot of games, or just want a cheap computer that can do a little of everything, get a PC. If you plan on hacking your programs and writing new programs, you'll more than likely want linux.

Can either you or Reverend Pyle actually qualify one of your blanket statements that macs are better please, cause otherwise I'm just going to keep on shouting about how good reeses pieces are!

hecter: I hear what your saying but these days it just doesn't make a difference what hardware your using, the days where MacOS handled advanced memory management and large files better than Windows, which are what made it superior for sound/video editing, are gone. MacOS is a skin on Unix, you may as well use Debian or Suse or what ever brand of *nix you like for all the difference it will make.

Apple make some fantastic software (they make some awful software too, Safari and iTunes being two cases in point) but their hardware is overpriced for what your getting, and at the hardware level the Mac's biggest plus point, usability is slowing being replaced by branding. Pick up a Mac Powerbook and go to open it, you can't. Why not? Because the Apple logo on the top has to be upside down to you so it opens. Not very usable I hear you cry, but wait, its really good for showing your brand off when the newsreader sits behind their powerbook on the TV.... Sad days...

For me the bottom line is Mac == Cool and that isn't worth the extra bucks (or the crappy single button mouse which is frankly shit for browsing porn one handed  - I know you can use other mice with macs but why spoil the fun)

Oh and I did notice the Pyle typo but it made me think of Full Metal Jacket which is an awesome film and hence brought a smile to my face so I left it in, no offence meant :)

The reason that I feel macs are better is probably really stupid, but i don't care. It's got the simple things that are better... for example it comes with bluetooth and a webcam. That is convenient, I don't want to have to plug up all of my usb ports with that.

Also they allow you to customize from the beginning so you aren't paying for extra nice features you don't really want. Or the fact that you can zoom it on your screen and not lose quality to look at something better.

Their superior software that comes WITH the machine like itunes>windows media player and safari>internet explorer, but in addition to that Imovie>windows movie maker. You can also get things like word powerpoint for it and they actually run better on a mac. By better I mean faster and smoother.

Its the simple things in life that matter to me. The thing about mac desktops and why they are not better is they are so much more expensive/harder to build and its not worth it, but mac laptops aren't much more and are actually cheaper than some windows like sony vaio and alienware.

Oh man we're going to have to stop right here... iTunes and Safari are the two worst peices of software Apple have ever made, Safari particularly, even Apple admit to that... (iTunes isn't actually as bad as all that but it is very hungry and does come bundled with QuickVirus which kind of puts me off...)

Years ago I used to be a Bill-hating, drum banging, Apple vigilante and never dreamed of using anything else... how times change :)
