Hey, it's not like we don't give a damn at all, or that we're completely ignorant about Australia.

For example, I like Erinsborough - I'm thinking of moving there one day, as it looks like it'd be a really nice place to live.

America should have its checks and balances re-adjusted to fit what the founders originally intended.

Well, I'm possibly a bit out of date here, but as I recall, there used to be a really nice cafe called "The Holly Roller", or something like that. Also, all the people there seemed really friendly, and always sort their problems out by sitting down and talking to each other, possibly over a "quiche". You could tell who the bad people were, because they smoked. It sounds like heaven to me.

I can't let this go without a reply.

With all do respect, you obviously do not know your beer.
There was a time when your statement held some truth, but not any more, not by a long shot.
If all the U.S. had to contribute to the beer drinker's world was BMC (Bud/Miller/Coors), then maybe you'd have a point. This couldn't be farther from the truth.

The Microbrewery explosion that occurred (and is still occurring) in the early '90's has propelled the U.S. to the top of quality beer production in the world.

Now, before all you Euros go ballistic, here me out.
I am by no means taking ANYTHING away from the beers produced overseas, as a matter of fact, I find them outstanding. Look at the web link in my profile, it points right to a Belgian beer site.

My point is this:
One can find in the U.S. the largest variety of high quality beer in the world from its microbreweries. These microbreweries brew small scale, from just a few dozen barrels a year, up to 15,000 barrels per year (beyond that they could not call themselves a microbrewery, but I digress). This allows the brewer to pay very close attention to every detail of the brewing process.

In the U.S., there is no Reinheitsgebot, or German purity law, by which we need to abide. That's kind of a gimmick now anyways, I'm just using it to make a point. U.S. brewers put just about anything in beer. If it tastes good, we'll brew it.
The shear size of the U.S. has allowed it to grow a great variety of hops & barley. The smaller size and generally cooler climate of Europe has also limited the ways in which it can grow these same crops.

As you can see, I'm a beer nut, and a homebrewer, so let me reitterate that I love European beers. From Germany's Kolsch, lagers & bocks, to England's bitters & IPA's, Ireland......c'mon now GUINNESS ! Up on the Isle of Orkney in Scotland lies a brewery that makes the best Scotch Ale in the world. And Belgium...... I could go on for days. Without the Europeans, I'd hate to think what the beer of today would be like.

If you think you've had American beer because you've had BMC, then you haven't had American beer.....

Ill prefer Cairns or Sydney. Melbourne is too English, its not really like moving to a new country.

Yer, Fawlty Towers is the best. Shame they only made 12 episodes, but that also kept it so good. The Germans is the best episode, with the moose and Basil concussed.

Alright Mr. Technicality. Let me rephrase even though it has little to do with my overall point concerning BEER.

"The smaller size and generally cooler climate of INDIVIDUAL EUROPEAN COUNTRIES has also limited the ways it can grow these same crops."

Is that better?

Not really, because more then 1 country in Europe makes beer, numerous countries do, so that point is still invalid....

I can't really comment on the rest because I do not drink.

Now you're arguing for the sake of arguing and not looking at my point, which is that Americans brew great beer. Which was in response to another post that said American beer wasn't any good.

mmm..... scotch......

Of course don't order a scotch in Scotland, they'll look at you like your an American.......

There is debate, however, whether it was the Scots or the Irish who perfected what we now call whisky.
Bourbon is uniquely American.

I love a good scotch (or Irish) whisky, after all, before it becomes scotch, it's BEER.

The entire world needs repair. America and England tend to have an unspoken fued because both feel like they are responsible for keeping this world in order but it's just too much. No matter how powerful one place gets you can't keep everything in order. That's why instead of fighting for power we should combine it instead...

I guess in respect for the author of this thread, it's best we don't.
It could still tangent back into the original topic.

HOWEVER, I think I will now start a new thread on this topic here in the Social Lounge where we can discuss it in length.

So without further adieu...... Luns, I'll see you over there.... 8)

... Okay, I admit, I've not been in the States for more than a few weeks in more than a decade. Microbrews, eh? Well, I hope you're right, because I'm heading back to the "Motherland" soon and I was rather concerned over this whole beer issue. (lager issue  )

... Backstepping to that point on the metric system... I've a friend who works here in Japan, as an engineer. He works with industrial machinery. They had a deal with a plant in Indiana that makes valves of some sort (for large pipes), but they had to cease all business with that plant, as the folk in Indiana could not give up the 3/8 inch bolts, and the 3/4 inch punched holes, etc... Converting to the metric equivalents, he said, was a nightmare they couldn't fix.

.... So now they get their valves from the Germans. People lost jobs in Indiana (maybe) over this medieval stubbornness.

... I mean, come on! Metric, man! It's a bit weird for about a year, maybe two years if you're a bit slow... but then it's the greatest thing in the world!

... My wife told me to make absolutely sure we pack the metric weight scales (body weight scales) when we go back to America, as she cannot fathom the meaning of weighing 100 pounds! Haha!
