Although this is more personal... What happened? Why is he gone?

its no biggie, im a fairly forthcoming person...

He died after a long battle with brain cancer nearly 2 and half years ago. Its hard to really be positive where it would have come from, though one might guess that working in photo dark rooms back when they didnt use the right chemcials might have had an effect over the years. Which is somewhat scary because thats where he met mom. Really if one was to guess, it would have seemed more likely that his drinking or smoking (which he did both fairly heavily, but not abusively, it just gave him a very large beer belly, which im trying not to follow suit with) but it was something completly out of left field like brain cancer. On the one hand we did get a lot of time with him as he fought the disease but at the same time its very difficult to watch a love one slowly die, especially for me since i was away at school and when i woudl come home to see him he always was much worse than the time before. It was certainly a hard period, but i think one that really taught our family a lot and i think has taught me a lot.

We are a pretty tightly knit family, though admittedly i probably am teh most detached of all of us. I think part of it has to be with being away, but as the oldest mom and dad always gave me the most independence. So i would say ive sort of gotten fairly use to being mostly my own type of person, but still theres a fairly strong connection between my family and i. Ive been very fortunate to have a wonderful family environment which has been very supportive, even after i shared that i had become an atheist, which was quite a shock to Andrea. They are great people and i love them a bunch. Im just sort of the wanderer type who comes and goes a bit more than most, but i still try and remember where im anchored to.

Well i think if i could change one thing off the bat i would probably try to end world hunger. If we assuming that i can wave my hand and have it done, then i would do that, but if we are being more practical then i would say i would hope to alter some of the issues regarding the way food is grown because some of these policies are directly related to why people are starving. I choose food because i think its one of the things we can realistically fight. Honestly in a world as technically advanced as ours, everyone should have clean water, food, and the ability to fight diseases like AIDS. Instead millions of people die because of things that should not be tolerated by a society as civilized as ours. Its just disappointing when you realize how much people have to fight for with so little, and material needs are things that we could certainly do better with.


If we assume that i have the power to really change whatever i wanted, then i would remove the profit motive (or change human nature so that profit motive didnt matter). Im certainly an idealist in i see the draw of socialism or communism but i realize that unless profit motive is changed that such dreams are quite possibly impossible. Our drive to consume is simply too strong. If i could miraclously change one thing that would fix probably nearly everything else, it would be our profit motive.

You raise interesting and important issues there. Since it's your thread I don't want to turn it into an "improve our world debate", though I would just add that if it was in my powers I would drastically reduce the world population reproduction rate. Less people means more resources for everyone, which means less competition (which also relates to your profit theory), and eventually leads to a better life quality. Overpopulation is the bane of mankind.

debate is probably not a terrible thing....

The only practical difficult is, how do you tell people when and when they cant have kids. Bringing life into this world is the paramount goal for many people and its hard to figure out solutions in praxis to the problem, though it would probably relieve a large amount of strain on our resources.

I actually dont tend to be too huge into music (my car doesnt have a working radio and my computer lacks speakers) so i dont have too many chances to stay up on things. Really though anything with a positive message or with an upbeat type of vibe to it i could probably get behind. Too much violence or objectification and usually id rather pass. Im fairly open minded about my music tastes, theres a lot of good stuff out there.

Though i did mess around a bit with some tonka trucks in my younger days (who hasnt) the name is actually referenced in the first response in the thread, basically its a remnant from a home poker game with my buddies.

ha, well if i was one of my profs i would say its because im not an ideologist, which i would then counter by thats an ideology (which i suppose is how debates as to whether or not atheism is a religion get started) but if i want to be me (and i do) i would say i just really havent found anything that i think would be good for people to remember me as, and i havent looked for a good tonka truck lately so until i find something worth putting up there then maybe ill do it. Eventually though maybe ill just be known as that no avatar guy, which would be a pretty impressive feat.

How long have you been a leftist? And what made you decide to be that?

i suppose i have officially been a leftist for about the last 4 years, coinciding ironically with very much of college. I think i held many stances that were probably more lean left before then, and the things that would have been more right of center, i was never as comfortable with.
