I'd never seen a Star Wars film until a friend bought me all 6 as a birthday gift 2 years ago. I had a week long marathon watching them in order starting with episode 1. I thought 1 was a good place to start ;)
I had another marathon last month. That is my history with Star Wars.
I enjoyed all 6 very much! All great films!

I have a few friends who are Star Wars fanatics and this issue has caused a great deal of debate.
In my opinion hardcore Star Wars fans feel a certain loyalty to the original trilogy and because of that loyalty they would prefer the original films over the new ones no matter what.
My friends who had never seen a Star Wars film until the new ones were released all seem to agree that the new trilogy is superior to the old one.

I love all 6 films. I think they're all amazing but in my opinion, the new trilogy is far better than the old one.
I'm going to get a lot of shit for this but I don't care
:D

by any chance are they lyrics from a song?

i like them all, i saw the original ones first and think the acting is far better. however i especially like the fight scenes and action in the newer ones, so for me they balance out :)

Well, Kid_A and alex, perhaps this is a generational thing. Star Wars was THE event when I was a kid - i watched jedi at the cinema when I was 8 or 9.

The original trilogy had everything - rogues, scoundrels, a princess, really badass baddies, that john williams score, a farmboy made good, aliens & monsters, spaceships, swordfights, magic (essentially, although i never heard of some all powerful force that... anyway), romance, comedy, fighting, lots of sticking it to the man, family problems...
I mean it was IT. I can't think of another movie franchise that has imprinted itself on our cultural memory anywhere near as much.

And George Lucas did it on a shoestring - the death star trench was made of plastic model kit parts glued to a ping pong table. Seriously. And maybe if he had had to approach eps I-III with similar budgetary constraints he would have made better movies. But he didn't, he made bombs. LOTR is the closest any franchise has come, and it was great, but there is a magic surrounding eps IV-VI that will never be recreated or recaptured.

I am 16 saw the original movies when I was like 6 and loved them. The newer ones are shit. I would like to point out that midichlorions (the organisms in the blood which are supposedly the force) only appear in the scene where Qui Gon Jin tests Anakin for them on Tatooine, they are never mentioned again (in the movies at least).

Original Trilogy trumps New Trilogy any day for me. Just like how with Trek, the TOS is infinatly better than any of the diarreha that Paramount was so good at making.

The first releases were the best for me because I was a kid when I watched them at the theater and the movies were the first of their kind that I and many others had seen.

Return of the Jedi is my favourite, only just edging out The Empire Strikes Back for the top spot.

As far as the new trilogy goes, I found ep 1 to be lacking. Ep 3 was the worst of the lot.

I have an affinity for ep 2 though, because it stars 2 Kiwi (and Maori) actors in the cast:

Temuera Morrison as Jango Fett (and other assorted clones)
and
Daniel Logan as the young Boba Fett.

Especially as the Bounty Hunter is one of my favourite characters in the series.

Kiwi patriotism aside, I have found ep 2 to be rather so-so.

Now, I HEARD, that originally the force was inspired by Lucas's fervent Buddhism. Between making the old movies and making the new movies he fell away from Buddhism. The midichlorians were a manifestation of that disenchantment with Buddhism and spirituality, an attempt to science-ify the Force. I think this attempt was met with a lot of hostility by fans, and so was forgotten in future movies. The new movies, you must admit, certainly try to please fans. Some call it pandering, but...

I used to love Star Wars. I still remember my dad taking me to the movies to see A New Hope in kindergarden. But after memorizing all the movies & reading most of the books, I kinda lost interest

It wasn't the original release, I think it was the release of the edited edition...I think it was 95 or 96

Yeah, maybe we are just in love with the nostalgia. But I just don't see how the new ones hold a candle to the originals in anything other than sfx.

i dont know why exactly, but i think the old trilogy is better. i liked episode 5 and 6 the most. the only problem with the old ones (it isnt really a problem) is that the special effects were great like twenty years ago but not now. if they went and recreated the first trilogy i wouldnt mind as long as the script was the same and all they changed were some of special effects parts, such as a computer generated yoda instead of a puppet.

of course you wouldnt throw away the older versions...i would still keep mine because there is nothing like the original.

that is the opinion of a kid that is not yet in high school :D

no midichlorians were an attempt to clarify what the force was, but after writing it, relized that it didn't hold water with the established continuity of the original trilogy, and so cut all other scenes with any mention of them. Case and point is that Obi Wan Kenobi could not have tested Luke Starkiller (original name, changed to Skywalker to meet ratings standards) on tatooine, nor could he have before his death at the hands of Anakin Starkiller (family name) aka Darth Vader. Therefore the midichlorians were dropped as a concept and only used to get young Anakin off of tatooine.

Personally I think the prequels are all shite.
Episode 1 was roundly hated by the fans due to Jar Jar and the fact that it was so childish. But I bet if you were a kid seeing it for the first time you would like it. Due to the massive fan backless though Lucas caved in and tried to make the next two more adult and aimed towards the "true fan". The acting and the dialog were ropy as hell though, and they suffer for trying to please two audience groups. It would have been better to say to hell with the fans (who were never going to like it anyway - nothing compares to nostalgia) and make it for kids - like the original ones. So now the wee kids think the 2nd and 3rd are boring and the adults think they're crap.
The other big thing that killed them for me was Lord of the Rings coming out at the same time. A similar big budget series that is infinitely better.

But the thing that I hate the most is Lucas dicking with the original films to make them fit in with the new ones. For god sake!
I liked that Ewok song at the end of Jedi, I really did. I miss it

all he needs is one fast ship and an incendiary device fired via projectile launcher, the force would help too, but we know that he isn't force sensitive

So why are there so many scenes in Episode I that mention midichlorians?

I don't see how the idea of midichlorians contradicts with the idea of being able to "feel the force". Also, sure Obi Wan knew that the force is strongly hereditary.

note that Ki Adi Mundi was the first of his family in 4 generations to be force sensitive, maybe in humans, but that is beside the point. If Obi Wan can just feel the force in Luke, why can't Qui Gon do the same with Anakin, who is said to have been good at that sort of thing? Obi Wan's ability to sense the force negates the need for midichlorions
