You can tell a lot about a game system beforehand by looking at the history of the company that made it.
Nintendo has been selling many successful consoles, trying to get their fans the best they could offer. Also, this is the only company in the running with a great history in durability. Counting the DS in this, you've seen the innovation they put in their design. It has the potential to be great, or absolutely terrible, depending on how the games are made. Watch out for that.
Microsoft based their entire first system on graphics and Halo. (face it, most of the other games were ports, or reasons for you to spend more money.)
Sony has a decent system, but they seem to be more interested in other entertainment devices, built into the system (DVD, MP3... stuff like that). As for whether or not it will be good for gaming, It seems like a gamble to me.
