No, but I do get mildly irked when I hear a pompous teenager dismissing everybody who he doesn't regard as part of the 'debating posse' as acting like 'idiots' simply because they don't want to use the forum for the same purpose that he does.
Also, I have a
gigantic ego which I take extremely seriously, especially when people I regard as intelligent are the target of petty aspersions on the internet...
Before we begin this, can I remind everybody that the reason I'm about to rip it out of Ambrose is not because I didn't get nominated enough; it's because he dismissed my list of highly-intelligent-non-debaters as 'idiots', because apparently he's a pompous blinkered ass who's been seasoned with a pinch of arrogance and a dash of illogicality.
Righto, we've got some hollow idols to smash, let's get started pronto:
OnlyAmbrose wrote:The funny thing about this is that this is the first serious post I think I've ever seen Dancing Mustard make

Well huzzah, I'm so glad that I'm chatting to somebody who appears to be juding me based on reading only a small fraction of my posts (because I've been serious on several previous occassions). It's so nice to hear somebody presuming to judge others (those on my list) as 'idiots' when they have clearly only observed a fraction of their online behaivour.
OnlyAmbrose wrote:Anywho, I'll bite.
How gracious of you. I can almost smell the disdain from here. Nice to know I'm chatting to a man with an open mind as to the merits of forum posters with whom he has had only fleeting previous interaction.
OnlyAmbrose wrote:No, I don't think it takes an amazing amount of intelligence to be funny.
I'm fairly certain that's a stupid thing to say; humour requires intelligence either for rapidly formulating an amusing reply on the spur of the moment, or in order to compose a barb in a previously unthought of way. Even the relatively simple task of identifying a subject as having the potential for comedy is an enterprise requiring intelligence.
Who knows, maybe you don't think 'funnies' require intelligence and you have a good reason for it. I'm imagining you're just not old enough to understand anything that isn't slapstick as being funny.
OnlyAmbrose wrote:If we were to start a "funniest member in the clubhouse" thread, the results might be similar, but definitely not identical.
Dubious; a lot of the people previously mentioned are rather humourless dry individuals who seem to do nothing other than pontificate about topical issues or wrangle over scoreboard placings.
Originally my point was that I was mildy peturbed that people seemed to be imagining that intelligence could only be demonstrated by debating. You seem to be trying to twist my words into saying that 'funny is the best way of demonstrating clever', but that really isn't the case.
As I said before, either you claim that debating is the only way of proving intelligence, or you'll have to concede that posters demonstrate intelligence (albeit less directly) when they post articulately and originally for more frivolous purposes. Here's a clue, one of the propositions is logically indefensible, and it isn't the second one.
OnlyAmbrose wrote:This is what I said and this is what I stand by:
You can't expect people to get nominated for an intelligence poll if they act stupid for the sole purpose of being funny.
And this is where you really rile me, "everybody who isn't debating serious business is acting like an idiot". Apparently the virtues of light sociable interaction and the merits of conflict-free information exchange are lost on you. Furthermore you appear to have been the victim of a sense-of-humour amputation. Have you any idea how arrogant it sounds to declare that the only useful thing to do online is lecture other posters on current affairs and ethical issues? How pompous you sound when you decry any other actions as being 'idiotic' and 'stupid'?
No, you probably don't, because so far as I can tell you're completely cacooned in your own ego, and consumed by delusions of your own intellectual superiority.
OnlyAmbrose wrote:No, it's not possible to gauge how smart a stand-up comic is based on his act."
Well why the hell not? Or are you one of these 'bald-assertion' monkeys? Can you explain to me why it demonstrates intelligence to present your opinions on issues in a lecture, but it doesn't demonstrate intelligence to be able to critically assess and find flaws in topics which you then lampoon in a humerous fashion? Are you honestly suggesting that the construction and delivery of a comic's act requires all of no intelligence to perpetrate?
No but seriously; are you? Because I thought you were supposed to be a smart kiddy...
OnlyAmbrose wrote:Where else would anyone give a damn what a 17 year old thinks on such matters?

If you're expecting me to throw my hands up and shout "Whoah, only 17, he's a genius!" then you're about to be sadly disappointed. For all your arrogance and pomposity you're sounding fairly hollow here, all I've had from you are bald statements and assertions. Come on, you're supposed to be champion of debate, aren't you relishing the prospect of another? Isn't this the chance to prove how much cleverer you are than somebody whose nominations you've dismissed as imbeciles? I'm suprised that somebody with such an enormous regard for their own abilities is running into such difficulty here.
Come on Amby, dazzle us with your brilliance. Crush those 'idiots' like only the 'smartest' person on CC can.
What's the matter? You're not going to let an 'idiot' demolish you again are you?
Norse wrote:The point to my post? well none really, life is what you make of it, and I among others would prefer to channel our gifted intellect into something that we can enjoy, including pissing people off.
I'm afraid that's the point here Ambrose... just because people don't enjoy droning on about serious business doesn't mean that they're not intelligent; and it certainly doesn't make all of their behaivour which isn't directed at serious business 'idiotic'. Perhaps you just need to learn to lighten up a bit before you attempt to ride your hobby-horse roughshod over the characters of other forum members... just a thought
