President Biden and his team certainly mismanaged our withdraw from Afghanistan. And we left many of those Afghanis who fought and who helped us as translators and with other key tasks.
I heard Biden being quoted as soon ago as July 8 NOT seeing this rapid and sudden collapse of Afghanis loyal to the government in Kabul.
The sudden collapse of the Government forces is stunning, but not surprising. We turned the tables quickly against the Taliban when we (the US and a few allies) went in in 2002 or so. BUT we could never win the hearts and minds of those living outside the major cities. I think those people make up most of the Taliban fighters.
As I already said, much of the Afghani fighters are really fighting tribal wars and are not, as a general rule, fighting with or against American strategic interests. They do want foreign invaders (as they view them) which are the Americans, OUT of their country. I do not buy the hawking arguments that our troops on the ground prevented another 9-11 or other terrorist attacks in the USA. The connection between Afghan freedom fighters and the Muslim terrorists seem to me tenuous. Bin Laden seemed to have bought and bribed his way inside the Taliban power structure which allowed him to train fighters without fear of reprisals. He was also a proven and well-recognized Mujahedin Freedom Fighter vs. the Soviets in the late 1970s, so had "street creds" to influence those in power in the Taliban in that time period.
Will Muslim militants be emboldened? likely. to attack the USA? I hope not and I hope we learned lessons from 9-11. We certainly did NOT learn the lessons of Vietnam and how to evacuate a nation. Scenes of the Afghanis clinging to departing aircraft are sad and deeply disheartening. The scenes are so reminiscent of Vietnam. PERIOD.
Will we see a return to the tribal fighting that has gone on in Afghanistan for the past 1,000 or so years? Likely. The repression of women? very likely, under conservation Taliban leaders. If after 20 years, TOO many American lives and wounded, and BILLIONS (or even Trillions) of US dollars, another year or 5 years or 10 years will NOT matter and will not alter the path of that nation "in name only." (I addressed this matter earlier in THIS thread, but since saxi keeps changing the title, that is unclear to me.)
As I said before, President Obama SHOULD have got us OUT of there after the death of Bin Laden. Trump tried and made some progress, but not fast enough for me. The DEBACLE of the chaos of the US withdraw is CLEARLY ON President BIDEN. I heard him say 1) "the Buck stops with me" and 2) that he would NOT do anything differently. REALLY? You OWN a disaster and have not learned from it? What a sad excuse for a leader and what pathetic actions (or lack of actions and some foresights) by the POTUS. ALL he had to do was READ saxi's daily POSTS to understand 1) the gravity of the situation and 2) the speed of the collapse of the Afghan army (i.e., the government forces.)
The USA does not look good to its allies, whether Kurds in Iraq or those who helped us in Afghanistan. I would allege that we could not get Afghanis out and settled in the USA FAST enough PARTLY because we are dealing with too many Hispanic ILLEGALS in our country NOW and we do not have sufficient facilities to house and transition LEGITIMATE refugees from Afghanistan.
This is a sad day for the USA and for Afghanis who helped the USA.
