Frankly, if you read the words (something you often tell people to do) there's nothing aggressive about it. "your sort" isn't denigratory, I might have been filled with admiration. And much the same goes for "that sort of thing" too.
Though technically right, your backtracking flies in the face of convention.
I’ve never heard anyone use the phrase “your sort” or “his sort” or “their sort” in a positive manner.
The implication has always been negative.
... and saying it with the ending “would be insulting without being specific” can only be taken two ways, both negative.
Now, I’m assuming you were teasing me, so I wasn’t offended, and do have thick skin... but if you meant to offend and wanna double down.
