This is a great blog. I specifically like the part that's not a blog.

It doesn't readily oxidise. Most metals do. Iron and copper, in the absence of advanced alloying technologies, soon turn to dust, and therefore no matter how valuable an iron object is today, it won't be for long. Coins were made of copper sometimes, but their value wouldn't last long. Gold pieces might lose some of their weight to abrasion, but not to oxidation.

Duk makes a number of good points. Also to note is the low melting point. It also goes well with a similar metal, silver.

It also is great together, in a metal once known as "Electrum"

Electrum is a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver, with trace amounts of copper and other metals. It has also been produced artificially, and is often known as green gold. The ancient Greeks called it 'gold' or 'white gold', as opposed to 'refined gold'. Its colour ranges from pale to bright yellow, depending on the proportions of gold and silver.

Electrum was much better for coinage than gold, mostly because it was harder and more durable, but also because techniques for refining gold were not widespread at the time. The discrepancy between gold content of electrum from modern Western Anatolia (70–90%) and ancient Lydian coinage (45–55%) suggests that the Lydians had already solved the refining technology for silver and were adding refined silver to the local native electrum some decades before introducing the pure silver coins cited below.

But the real item coveted was actually SALT. Wars were fought over it.

If Andy Rooney wrote instead of giving his "few minutes" orally ... it would be a blog.

Go easy there Tzor you coming close to getting sideways of Doom and his female dog by saying that this is what a blog might possibly be and as I have stated before this topic is exactly what it is supposed to be the underage female dog doesn't get the idea so she has to back up her great master doom because he obviously is incapable of coming up with an original thought or idea of his own
