The added supply will drive prices down a bit, sure, but that won't stop the speculation on the commodities market unless something major happens that makes oil just as plentiful as dirt. Of course, this microbe might be able to do just that, so who knows?

In any case, I would much prefer we keep developing alternative fuels and higher mileage cars simply for conservation and green purposes.

Jay, I really don't think that Lizardmen blood is a viable substitute for oil...

I mean, it's a nice idea and all. But I just don't see it working in pracitce, what with lizardmen being made-up and all.

I agree with HOLOGRAM here. But the link was interesting. I can't see whether the price drop will hold or what...Good post.

I too, am proud of JAY for referencing FOX NEWS in a positive way.

Jay, you should've given them the link to the story in the (London) Times.
This appears to me to be an interesting and credible story. I don't know how practical this'll be, but let's wait and see.
(See jay, I don't just automatically discount everything you say. Just most of it.)

it ain't over yet. oil is still $133.66 as of post time and that is not dropping anytime soon. As awesome as these microbes may be, it will take a long time to get them to a point of actually being cheaper to genetically modify these bacteria, not to mention how long it will take for one bacteria to make a whole barrel of oil.

Seems like an amazing discovery but I doubt it is enough to drop gas enough.

I just saw something recently about the tale of two completely different oilmen.

The Chairman of BP, Peter Sutherland is predicting that the era of cheap gas is over. He is expecting oil at $250 a barrel by next year.

OPEC, in its recent monthly market report predicted the exact opposite and stated that there is "little support for prices to remain at current levels." In lowering their demand forecast they are expecting the price to drop.

Apologies to Captain Obvious.
But oil prices are, over the long term, just gonna go up and up.
Cos -drum roll - i don't think there is infinite oil.

We need more nuclear power stations.
Utterly safe.

Keep dreaming. The gas/oil situation is gonna stay as is untill we stop using gas all together.

That might make prices level out temporarily, but they will start rising again very soon. The supply isn't gonna last forever. While we're on the subject, lowering taxes on oil companies would NOT benefit middle class and poor people.

Do any Americans here know why your government banned off-shore oil and gas drilling?

?? I thought there were lots of oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico right now. As far as I know, oil spills are usually caused by tanker ships having problems, not by off-shore drilling.

That's the shittiest idea I've heard so far. Perhaps we can call it Organic Gas instead?

(Hey they already have "Orgenic Dry Cleaning" why not "Organic Gas?")
