military service

Postby Simonov on Mon Nov 12, 2007 7:09 pm

regular civilian army is getting canceled in Croatia from the beginning of next year and we're depending only on professional army from now on. i think this is a step in a wrong direction.

therefore i won't have to regulate my military service. 4 years ago i got my civil army i.d. and was assigned to infantry division. i looked forward to pass military training (there was an opportunity to serve your duty in civilian institutions if your religion or personal beliefs prevented you from military training).

what is your stand on civilian army and other national defense forces?

p.s. last option is for idealistic pacifists with no comprehension of real world.

Agreed. Although I really wish 3 was a viable option, people are usually less likely to support military action if its their ass on the line.

Personally, I have a certain fondness for the idea of some kind of national service, if not necessarily military service.

But I have a certain reluctance to push such an idea, considering that neither I nor my father ever had to do anything like that.

EDIT: Hey, I just remembered that women shouldn't be excluded. So, it's relevant that my mother never had to do national service, either.

everyone normal would like 3rd answer to be possible but i doubt that will ever come to pass. professional army is the strongest force and most valuable asset of every nation's defense but i believe if a major war happens civilian army is the one which will have a decisive impact on it's course. quick crash-courses how to wage war would be very ineffective then.

so i believe it would be more effective if every male person would have to pass military training just as a matter of precaution and everyone who loves their country would gladly do so. btw military training here lasted for 6 months what i believe isn't too long.

I'd say civilian and professional as well. Professional (volunteer army) for the most part. And only if need be, a civilian army.

ok, but my question was should civilian be obliged to pass military training when they reach 18, or when finish their education even in the time of peace.

I believe in the good old communistic approach
you should server you country for X amount of years, and then be ready to defend it if the opportunity arises.

... Military service should not, in my opinion, be mandatory.

... That said, military service does wonders for a young population. But still, strictly voluntary.

In all honesty, if it comes to the absolute worse case scenario, use the draft, or at least a version of it. The US used the draft in both WWI and WWII (not the Vietnam kind, but a draft nonetheless). Other then that, I believe that our Volunteer Professional army is good enough.

I believe every male between the ages of 18 and 45 should be a reservist member of the army, women can join too. And if for some reason they won't or can't be a soldier, they could be government regulated reservist civic workers like medics, police etc. etc. I believe a form of conscription like this would benefit a country in many ways. And then there's always professional military. I believe it would be a good mix. And I like the idea that the American founding fathers had of a civilian militia, to protect the country from internal and external threats.

No service from me, either. I won't fight/kill/die in the name of a country. The flag doesn't trick me into doing shit.

Haha, that's right. When all else fails, challenge one's 'MANHOOD' -

Because I really worry about whether I fit society's definition of what it means to be a man anyway. Go die for your country, I'm sure it will be worth it

Pride? I don't take pride in my country. Take make the decisions, not me. I don't consider myself aligned with any country really, I only live on U.S. soil.

Well you keep doing that - armies need dimwits like yourself thinking like that to keep the machine running.

no, I'd rather not, I don't agree with most of what my country does now. and If I died, anywhere. It wouldn't be in war. I don't believe war. (Yes, very odd, to be on a world domination site. )

yeah i remember that quote
and i used to believe the same
but, somehow, it seems right to die for something.
Otherwise, you will never fufil you life. Because, come to think of it, what is life? And how do we live it to the fullest? By getting money, going to strip clubs, buying drugs, or doing stupid dangerous shit? Nobody knows, so as long as no one has the answer to that question i will believe that the best thing i can do is serve my country, even if its not the greatest one in the world, and even if its politicians are fat greedy son's of bitches. Plus i wouldnt be fighting for them, I would be fighting for motherland.

My life is fulfilled, as long as I make myself happy, and other people happy. ;) Not because I go off to war, and fight for something I don't believe in.
