Irony . . .

Postby MR. Nate on Sat Nov 03, 2007 8:17 am

I was wandering through a bookstore (a chain, not privately owned) and I happened past the Religion section. Ok, I tend to go there a lot, mostly just to be irritated at the number of books Max Lucado has in comparison to C.S.Lewis. Anyway, I noticed something a little odd. The Atheist Bible was there, between the leather-bound KJV's & the Strong's. So I'm wondering, has atheism changed? or am I right in thinking that they need to move this particular volume?

I suppose in a sense it's much like having a book on nihilism in the philosophy section.

Though i havent actually read it, i believe the atheist bible is essentially the bible, with all the commentary from atheist that claims that its wrong/errors and the like.

So since its a bible i suppose thats where its supposed to go.

that makes sense
or maybe it is a bible, but a bible from atheists point of view
so they would rephrase a lot of parts to fit their believe.

Then they should put some KJV in the atheist section so the other position can be represented fairly.

actually having done just a bit more web searching (to try and find the link) i may have committed terrible lies. It appears there are works out called the athiest bible, which are more of repositories of atheist thought rather than bibles redone.

Ive seen both though i guess.

Did you thumb through it? What was it about?

Surely you have heard the adage "You can't judge a book by it's cover".

Atheists & Evolutionists keep saying that they aren't religious. Yet they keep starting churches. There is almost always some combination of atheist ideology with evolution as it's basis. The result is what they call a belief in reality.

Take a look:

Atheist Church Web Site

Or they try to say that they are Freethinkers:

Texas Freethought Church

Here they are in Houston

But they're not religious right?

Religion is nothing more than a belief system, and atheism, despite its various branches, falls neatly under that category.

No. No it doesn't. It is an absence of belief.

If I have a three types of teapot and then no teapot, the last concept is not classified as something to pour tea with, is it? It is a simple lack of something. A nothing. They are not opposing ideologies, twos sides of a coin... It seems to be a concept believers have trouble with.

Yes, my post over-simplified.

My point is that the belief in nothing is still a belief

This is a concept believers cannot contemplate, but no it is not. I don't believe in anything. It isn't a belief. I don't believe nothing exists. I just don't believe. Why can a lack of belief not exist as a concept? My analogy still stands.

not believing is agnosticism, believing in nothing, atheism if you want to get technical.

Nope, Agnosticism (from the greek a - without - gnositc - knowledge -) means you don't think it can be known or ascertained. Agnostics think it isn't possible to ever truly know whether God exists or not.

If you want to get technical...

The root is gnosis (gamma-nu-omega-sigma-iota-sigma), not "gnostic". gnostikoi (gamma-nu-omega-sigma-tau-iota-kappa-omicron-iota) or gnostics are knowledgeable ones, reffered to by PLATO. Then there are the gnostic manochæist heresies, but lets not get too technical, eh?
Now my point is that agnosticism is belief in nothing, due to the impossibility to choose a belief, atheism is the open statement of rejection of a deity, in itself, as a form of "gnosis", or insightful perception of the nature of the cosmos, I believe can be considered religion.
