I debate on this site because I enjoy it. I wouldn't do it if I didn't.

And I like hearing others opinions because they expand my own. I realize my opinion is not absolute, therefore by putting it out there, all the flaws in it are picked apart, and corrected by myself.

And it's fun.

well i disagree with you on a couple points.

Someone mentioned there are 2 different types of debate once....the type to try and win someone over (which is rarely going to happen on the internet) or the type to promote clarity of positions. I think the second one can be fine, because you learn more about not only the other groups position, but also more about yourself by discussing it.

Most people dont take the time to think about how people might see things differently, or challenge some of their own assumptions about the world.

When you have hte freedom to say what you want behind a computer (because some people wont otherwise) you really get to hear how people concieve things, and sometimes that can add to your total of knowledge.

It all depends on how you approach it.

i learned my lesson about getting into heavy online aurguements a long time ago. and that was with a lot of politically like minded people. it's too easy for the conversation to go sour online.

All I know is that when someone offers 1 million dollars to anyone who can prove a 757 hit the pentagon like this government says, and nobody can show such proof there really isnt anything to debate.

and yet there is players here who still want too.

ohh and when you follow sports teams for most of your life then the kicker molests little tykes and they give him a slap on the wrist and move him to another team and hush it up in the papers, and he continues earning millions of dollars and you keep watching and groveling to sports and didnt learn anything from that, then your a pathetic worm that needs to go to jail with the other jock sniffers and molesters and the stadium needs to be torn down and never rebuilt and the whole team disbanned. And when a tennis star gets caught with steriods they need to break both her arms and kneecaps.

it makes sense. . . I debate for fun (or when someone is denying proof from many sources [i.e. someone denying the existence of global warming])

I debate because i enjoy debate but also, sometimes, with the hope that i could in some tiny way impart a small nugget of sentiment.

I also debate in the hope of learning.

you can say that there is 'no fact, only opinion' ... this in itself is an opinion which at worst holds such intangibility that it offers up an abstract tool as the cornerstone, constructed of evasion, to act as foundation for any argument.
At best the maxim is a universal truth to keep at bay arrogance and obdurate belief (a paradox in itself)

I disagree profoundly that viewpoints can not be changed by a place like this.

Every single person who has ever lived, embarks upon a journey of learning. Many begin as passionate idealists and end up as resigned pragmatists. There is nothing wrong with either state (many will prefer the memory of that idealist who still lurks.... Some will be guilty and angry at inaction; in so being, they create an even more stark dichotomy between the new and the old.)

Change of opinion may not be measurable within a 'thread' due to the adversarial and partisan nature of debates. It is usually too much an affront upon the ego to accept another's antithetical perspective.
However if the point was well made, the view is stored.. sometimes grudgingly and buried deep. This view may well surface later, at least as an amendment to the previous view.

Partly the point is that no one enjoys losing an argument. If we do not tailor our views in the face of a superior tenet... our arguments will always lose!

So, is that how you approach it? Because looking at some threads... I really don't think xtra is just clarifying his position(s), just from looking at his persitency. Also, I don't know about every christian on this site but I'm pretty sure jay for one is trying to change other's views, and I wouldn't be surprised if his opponents are atleast trying to defend their views, looking at the namecalling thats been taking place

thats at least my perspective, everyone does things differently. I think people tend to get what they want out of forums like these, if you want to debate issues you do it for a variety of reasons. People wouldnt do it over the long run if they werent getting something out of it.

You see, you don't really come across as a credible source when you can't use correct grammar ;)

And I hope your attempted assault on sports wasn't directed towards me, because I have never said anything on this site which would suggest that I would idolize sports in such a way.

Well I hope I understood enough of that to give a decent reply

I have heard of this fact/opinion saying, and while I agree that a line must be drawn between fact and opinion, what I'm saying is that people agree with others who have the same opinions and disagree with those who don't, but there are things that people with the same opinions on one matter profoundly disagree on. Because of this, anyone who promotes their ideas variously is essentially promoting their whole "hexagon" on everybody. Do you agree with that?

and alright I think I understand the rest...

Here is my opinion:
I debate simply because I like to express my point of point of view, thus, I consider debating fun. If it were not at least slightly fun, why would you do it? I suppose the reason why it is fun is because I like to disagree and essentially say that I am right and you are wrong. I agree that debating on this site is pointless but hey, I obviously have nothing better to be doing
