Which way does it look like the girl is rotating?

http://www.ebaumsworld.com/pictures/view/41127/

At first all I could see is clockwise. I tried to see counter clockwise for a very long time and I eventually managed it by covering part of the pciture and catching a glimpse of her leg....then I just pretended it was going the other way. Once I got it going counter clockwise I could not switch back for the life of me....I had to come up with a different trick involving the rotation of her planted foot. Now I can switch back and forth between the two views using each of those tricks, but it is still tough for me to change once I start seeing it one way. Absolutely crazy illusion!

How about you?

Update: I can now switch the rotation easily by looking at the planted foot only, and then at the whole picture afterward. It took a lot of practice to be able to switch views easily though!

There is no doubt she is spinning clockwise. Unless I don't look at it and just catch it in my periferial(SP?) vision. Then it's going counter clockwise...so I go...OMG...and look at it and it flips back around.....

I can only see counter-clockwise. I can't even imagine how it could be clockwise...

EDIT: I just opened it again and now I only see it going clockwise. Maybe it's a trick...

Yes, I'm certain now. It's a trick. It changes back and forth. Watch it for a couple of minutes and it becomes clear.

Nicely done trick. Unless you look at the shadow of the foot, you can barely see it change direction.

It wasn't spinning either way for me. My brain must be broke.

Though she is actually spinning CW for me. I guess I'm one of the few creative people here.

I found that you can actually make her move her outstretched leg from one side to the other, without her ever completing a full revolution.

When the outstretched leg is pointing to the right of the screen, focus on the foot, and the leg seems to rotate round in front of her to the left. Then as it reaches the left side of the screen, focus on the foot again and it goes back to the opposite side. Just keep switching the focus from side to side, and she never turns all the way round. Of course for this to work, she has to appear to switch legs mid turn - when she is swinging to the right i.e counter-clockwise, she appears to be standing on her right leg and when she swings to the left in a clockwise motion, she's standing on her left.

Pretty cool stuff!

Both directions, using the outstretched foot to switch.

Does anyone here use Microsoft Excel regularly? There's a similar phenomenon when you use the copy function on a cell, or group of cells. The cells become highlighted with a broken line, and this broken line can be perceived to be moving either clockwise, or anti-clockwise. And if you're at work and really bored, you can get the broken line to constantly switch directions, so that it never "moves".

'Course, this dancer is much more impressive than a broken line.

well done meg you figured it out, great work. but that says that the original assumption of this test is correct you have highly developed logic.

I started of seeing Clockwise, but can now manage to change it at will.

It doesn't change back and forth on it's own as I was watching her go one way while someone else was watching her go another way at the same time.

look carefully and you'll notice she even changes the leg she stands on. it's at trick! these are mirror images of the same doll changing randomly.

I swear it switches back and forth (I could see CCW, then CW, then CCW again, without any change of perspective).
