Good things about the United States of America

I think it's time we talk about things that we like about the US. There is way too much division, talk about negative stuff and bad things the "other side" is doing. There are jerks around but for the purposes of this discussion please try to ignore them.

So any good experiences or stories you have let's see them.

I'll start.

When I was in New Orleans when you go out in public there was almost always someone singing. Sometimes they were quite good at it too.

OK: when I first moved to the US, the neighbours were very welcoming: next door uphill gave us bread and salt (apparently a traditional Jewish welcome), downhill neighbour came and sat outside in the garden with us, bringing a bottle of wine. The mixed-race lesbian Wiccan couple opposite gave us choc-chip cookies, and John up the road told us we could use his pool whenever we wanted. Oh, and we were invited to the block party the following week.

One of the most magical times I ever spent was in Havasu Canyon, which is a tiny offshoot of the Grand Canyon. It has a series of three waterfalls, at least two of which I've seen on lists of the most scenic waterfalls in the U.S. You can't drive down, it's hike all the way from the top. Takes pretty much a full day. Awesome, awesome scenery.

A friend of mine went to New Orleans for me a while back and got me some Jalapeno Powder Seasoning. That stuff rocked. I'm quite sad I am almost out.

I was lucky enough to be born here in the US to a well educated white couple.

As such I have been afforded privileges my whole life... which (although I have worked hard) has helped enabled me to achieve a place relatively free from want. Yes there are things I ‘want’ but all my needs are met. I am safe. I have access to food, education, entertainment, etc. This situation (being able to live in a place that enables a life like mine) is not uncommon... there are many other countries/places in similar situations, and the list I think is growing... but though not uncommon it is still a minority of the world’s population.

Once in LasVegas we went to Burger King.

While there a really nice gentleman possibly with autism, I'm not a Doctor. He definately was an interesting fellow. He came over and gave me coupons explaining several times, "Here's some coupons. They are for your family."

On the way out, I went out of my way specifically to where he was sitting, drinking a milkshake and thanked him for his kindness.

Trump also is guilty of virtue signaling... his sole virtue being “I do what’s best for me and if it hurts anyone else (or everyone else) I don’t care.”

I had a very similar experience, in Detroit.

I was making a delivery in downtown Detroit. On the way out stopped for something to eat. Standing in line at Burger King, this huge black guy approaches me. I'm the only white face in the whole place. Not paranoid, but wary. "Here's some extra coupons I didn't use," he says, and hands me a coupon. I thanked him, he smiled and moved on. It was cool.

You know you're raised to think that if you ever walk into a black neighbourhood you'll be lucky to get out alive, but every time that I've actually been in one I've been treated just fine.

The guy in Vegas was black too.

I know a guy named Bob who went to a Kentucky Fried Chicken place in the wrong area once in Michigan in the 1970s. Place was full and he and his companion were the only white guys, possibly for miles.

Bob claimed the place went silent and a large fellow came over and asked them, "What the f*ck do you think you're doing here?"

Bob told me he got pretty scared and answered, "We just got here from Canada. We have been driving all day and we're hungry. We wanted to get some chicken."

Suddenly the huge guy grinned and said, "You're Canadians? Shit, come on in."

I picked up 6 guns in the last 5 months, all at half value or better. Luckily my neighbor is an FFL guy so he always has my current data on file. Makes it so easy.

Cool 1959 colt .22 revolver, a henry .22 lever action, a sweet 12 G coach gun, a little rossi .22 semi auto carbine and two winchester M59 12 G's (I collect those specifically for 30+ years).

I just got a single action .22 - I've never had a single action revolver before. I've never even fired a single action revolver. We have a de facto 10 day waiting period (slow walking bg checks), though, so I haven't picked it up yet.

i'd love to have a Colt SAA, but don't think i could afford one. probly just end up grabbing one of them clones from Italy, for like $800. probly a Pietta, because Uberti uses a retarded transfer bar now - which sort of defeats the purpose of buying a SAA in the first place...

. a nice coach gun would be pretty sweet, as well - but i've heard they're now illegal to own up here, which is sort of ridiculous, imo. haven't checked the regs, tho.
