Lala Land was an okay movie with good music. That's about it.

A white guy movie about jazz? It's almost trolling after last year's oscar boycott.

White people aren't allowed to play jazz? Are they allowed to get on black buses at least?

Last week Sym went to Ippudo for a bowl of ramen. After he finished eating he was about to rate it a 4.5 on Trip Advisor, but then he looked behind the counter and saw the two chefs on duty were white guys. So he rated it 4.0 and left the tag 'not authentic'.

You really could have googled this:

Interesting.

Not really. I'm not too familiar with the academy awards, but from the link spike lee said there were 20 contenders for actor nominations? Blacks make 13% of the population, so if the awards are representative of the population, it would be at most three nominees who are black. That's a small enough number to allow for omission by simple fact that some movies got more positive traction, rather than to attribute it to racism. Unless you're spike lee, and have a chip on your shoulder about such things, then you see what you want to see.

These are probably the same people who cry about the electoral college not being representative of the voting population.

It's more of the same. People want their bullshit to prevail over other people's bullshit without realizing the double standards they create.

Me either.

No, jk, what gets my goat is people saying one thing but then doing another. So if you're ever unsure, just ask:
"is this person preaching something?"
Fine if they are.
"Does this person practice what they preach? Do they walk the walk?"
If no, then you can probably expect me to bitch about it.

Pretty simple. I like consistency in ideology. They could be a hardcore whatever, they could have views that counter everything about me, and I'll respect them if they're at least consistent.

In this case, the Smiths and Lee are complaining about inequality, yet want over-represenation.

Besides, the awards theoretically should be based on merit, no? Arbitrarily setting some minimum number of minority nominees defeats the purpose. It's not like minorities have never won an academy award.

aaaaaand there's a counterpart to that too though. There is such a thing as institutionalised racism, and it's difficult to counteract.

Now, let's not be dicks here and pretend that the best film wins the best film oscar. I hope you're with me so far. At least you can say that Citizen Kane should of beat How Green was my Valley. Apocalypse Now shoulda beat Kramer vs Kramer, right?

There are other factors at play, is my basic point.

Never saw How Green Was My Valley, although i think Citizen Kane is overrated. I didn't really enjoy it. I think the lighting was excellent, but otherwise meh.

I'm sure favoritism plays a large part in the social circles of whatever goes in to determining who receives an award. But is it attributable to racism? In Hollywood? C'mon, these are the type who love to impress everyone with how progressive they are.

Your original article mentioned how the Idris Elba movie got passed over. I didn't watch it, but i do think he's a pretty good actor. Did the movie do well? According to Wikipedia, Netflix bought rights to it, and thus the big movie theatres boycotted it. I think i heard someone that academy awards or some other awards show traditionally snubbed Netflix stuff. My point being, it seems like a stretch to immediately cry "racism!" when only white actors (the majority in Hollywood) get nominations when it could be more attributable to who knows who, and who's popular at the moment. My impression of Hollywood is it's high school politics.

I think my point is kind of aligned with yours, though it may take a stretch. There is such a thing as institutionalised racism. It means that there is no great bogeyman. and nobody specific to blame, but there is a system in place that discriminates from top to bottom.

An academy judge has gotten to his or her position through a system that may have at some points been actively racist, but at a more basic level would never have even considered a black guy for a cameraman, or a black actress for a role that wasn't explicitly listed as requiring a black actress. They've risen to that peak of judgement, flawed as it is, through a kind of discrimination that is ridiculously hard to beat.
