Greatest Horror movie

What's your number 1 horror film? I've put a few classics in a poll to give a few ideas.

my personal favorite is Saw. I don't really care about the gore, I really enjoy the plot with a complicated and nuanced villain.

though, I'd have to say that the greatest is the Shining. I think it's the quintessential horror film

IT is a good call, but I'm not going to add it as the book is far more terrifying and it's (pun intended) currently being remade.

I also don't want to overload the list with King adaptations.

Yup- it's been in the works for a while. You can look it up, but there's plenty of links floating around.

Evil Dead/Army of Darkness series. So bad, yet so good.

I suppose it's not a fair test, but Night of the Living Dead really scared the shit out of me. I was only 11 of 12 when I first saw it, and at that impressionable age I was really hit bad. I couldn't sleep without my shotgun for weeks. I would turn off the light and the images of the zombies would appear on my wall, so I had to cuddle up with my shotgun for comfort. It's a miracle I didn't accidentally shoot myself in my sleep.

The only other "horror" movie I saw at an early age was Rosemary's Baby, and it wasn't scary at all. It seemed like a soap opera to me.

All the other things on the list I didn't see until I was an adult and no longer so vulnerable. Nowadays I find horror movies disgusting rather than scary. The whole idea of deliberately killing and mutilating people starts to seem more and more abhorrent once you realize how real it is. There's nothing in Saw or its siblings that hasn't actually been done by the KGB or the Gestapo or Boko Haram, and once you get that in your head, it's more sad than scary that people spend their time thinking up shit like that.

for me, it was "a nightmare on elm st." - slept the whole summer with the hall light on after that one. the exorcist'll still do it to me if i'm watching it alone @ night after i've had a few heroic sized rails, tho... 8-)

Uh, this isn't even a question. Evil Dead, by a longshot. It's just straight-up fact.

#2 would be The Thing.

For write-in, Alien.

Urgh- I debated putting in Alien, also Event Horizon. Dismissed them as sci-fi more than horror. But then, The Thing is kinda sci fi too...

I know, hence the internal debate. Alien is a classic monster movie, but I think I it's more sci-fi than horror. Event Horizon, similarly.

I would argue the second may be more sci-fi than horror. The first is more firmly entrenched in horror, imo.
