Victorian novelist Charles Dickens was one of the best known authors of his time era. One of his best works is Oliver Twist. The plot of this book is still used today as the plot used in what are now called soap operas. Dickens, a literary genius, was either widely acclaimed or criticized for the satire he achieved through characterization, the method the author uses to develop the personalities of the individuals in his work. Whether it was by the use of direct characterization, the physical and personality traits of the individual or even indirect characterization, described through the characters own words, thoughts, and actions, dickens made his audience relate to each ones of his novels. One of these prominent characters in Oliver Twist is Mrs. Maylie. Although Dickens gave her many angelical qualities the one that perhaps grasps the readers attention more is her compassion.
Rose Maylie is a young woman who lights up the room. “the young lady was in the lovely bloom and spring-time of womanhood… not past seventeen… mild and gentle, so pure and beautiful… very intelligence that shone in her deep blue eyes…changing expression of sweetness and good humor… cheerful, happy smile…”(P.250-260). This quote, an example of direct characterization, describes rose as a intelligent, lovely beautiful woman whom is a sweet and cheerful, a fun person to be around and possibly very nice.
Rose Maylie’s angelical appearance makes the reader think that she is most likely a compassionate being. The reader may verify those beliefs by looking at the way she acts towards Oliver, which suggests that she is a kindhearted person. “As she stooped over him her tears fell upon his forehead… This poor child can never have been the pupil of robbers… can you really believe that this delicate boy has been the voluntary associate of the worst outcast of society?… But even if he has been wicked think how young he is; think that he may never have known a mother’s love or the comfort of a home… have pity upon him before its too late…”(P.263-264). Rose feels bad that he’s been shot and that he’s gotten so sick. She believes that Oliver should be given another chance because he never had the advantages of having a mother or home. She felt sorry for him because he was used so badly by people and their thirst for evil.
It is very clear that rose is compassionate to Oliver, a poor sick boy in need of help. However she is also compassionate to Harry, her fiancé. “you can say nothing to alter my resolution… I owe it alike to others and to myself… if your lot had been differently cast… if you had been even a little, but not so far, above me - if I could have been a help and comfort to you in any humble scene of peace and retirement, and not a blot and drawback in ambitious and distinguished crowds - I should have been spared this trial… I cannot help this weakness, and it makes my purpose stronger…“ (P.314-316). When Harry’s political career was on the line because of his relationship with her, a no-name adoptee, she stepped out of the way disregarding her feelings so he could pursue his dreams.
Her compassion did not stop at the sickly boy and the man she loved. The reader can get a sense of just how compassionate Rose Maylie really is by the way she treats Nancy a thief and a possible prostitute. “if you are in poverty or affliction I shall be truly glad to relieve you if I can… I pity you, it wrings my heart to hear you…let me save you yet for better things… it is never too late for penitence and atonement…” (358-361). Portrayed above is Rose Maylie’s biggest display of compassion. Being a orphan herself Rose Maylie understands what Nancy had to go through. Unlike her she didn’t have the advantages of a foster home or the love of anyone.
Rose Maylie young and naïve, filled with beauty; lights up which ever room she is in with her cheerful mood. Compassionate towards a poor sickly boy in need of a home and motherly love. A being overflowing with affection, a fondness portrayed towards Harry, her fiancé. She puts away her own delight to see the people she cares for happy. Rose is so filled with kindness that she even felt compassion for the scum of society, for a reject who sought repentance. Through the characterization of Rose Maylie Dickens probably reached many of his readers, whether they could relate to the people she was kind to or she herself.
