Halloween means more than that... Well, Samhain does.

New Years makes sense... Even though the TIMING of New years doesn't...

Christmas makes sense, though the true holiday is not followed.

Keep in mind the level of technology and prosperity of Americans at the time. A good deal of the country was busy working to put food on the table and/or didn't know how cruel the Trail of Tears was.

Well, the Trail of Tears does fall into the steal their land and kill them category. And you can't really blame Americans (the people that celebrate Thanksgiving) for anything up until the late 1700's anyways since everyone before them was technically a subject of foreign countries. I guess the Trail was just the best (more like worst I suppose) example of murdering Native Americans considering the huge amount of death.

our kid-centered culture forces adults to buy candy so the candy companies can make lots of money.
you'll find this is true with lots of american holidays. It's called capitalism. Its rampant.
and horrible.
and yet, so invariably addicting, we all follow it without thinkink, or caring.

its because getting candy on halloween is so much fun, and getting presents on christmas is so standard, and giving gifts to your girlfriends on valentines day is so essential, that trying to do otherwise is competely against the rules.

As the Argentinians, Indians, people of Barbados, Austrailians, and all other victims of English "colonization" throughout the world to the English.
Or the people of the Americas to the Spanish.
Or the Jews and other Euros to the Germans.
Or the Poles and Eastern Europeans to the Russians.
Or the Phillipinos to the Japanese.
Or the Taiwanese to the Chinese.
Or the African tribes amongst each other.
Or the American Indians amongst themselves.

You people need to get a dose of reality.

The American Thanksgiving holiday is not about the celebration of "white's dominance over the poor, peaceful, native tribes of the Americas", as you typical guilt ridden liberals like to spout.
It's about giving thanks for what we all have: life, family, friends, etc. Just as those pilgrims were giving thanks; for if it were not for the help of some of the natives, they probably would not have survived.

i tend to think pleanty of hollidays make sense. especially if you know the meaning behind them and celebrate them in apagan sense. celebrating them as Yule and Eoster as "cristian hollidays" is pretty stupid.
