Kind of related to CC but not

Postby cdnfireman on Tue Nov 20, 2007 12:13 am

I couldn't really find a forum to post this, but I'm doing it to expand my personal knowledge.

There was a thread started about elminating the secret alliance rule to make it more like real life, of course it got flamed because it seemed to be started by a krusher alliance, or what ever.

Now I'm interested in war history and follow world news alot, but obviously I haven't been on this planet for hundresd of years, or thousands. As far as I know in present or recent war history that I have read about, I really haven't seen any real secret alliance between countries that have been made that determined the fate of any war. Any war alliances I know of where not kept secret.

If anyone can just briefly mention any secret alliance which have been made and found after the fact, between which countries and which conflict so I can research them. Secificly any that where very secretive until any attacks where made and caught the other opponents off guard?

I know of several war attacks caused by one country ala Pearl Harbour.

Sorry for maybe sounding like a moron with war history, but it's something that has peeked my interest, but I have not really looked into the secret alliance thing in real life war history.

Thanks in advance, and I hope this topic belongs here.

change the title dude, to get more views. this forum is called "The Clubhouse", and in here you can post ANYTHING. only in general discussion does it have to be CC-related.

Loads of this went on in pre-modern times. Off the top of my head, look at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 to find instances of leaders making secret alliances against the blokes they were supposedly aligned with.

There was also the failed attempt by Germany to get Mexico to declare war on the US during WW1 via the infamous Zimmerman Telegram (also the title of a book on the subject by the amazing Barbara Tuchman).

In a micro sense, look at the plotline of any decent film noir movie.

And, of course, there's always that infamous battle in Braveheart where the Irish mercenaries charge the Scottish lines, only to stop at the last minute and join up with their Celtic brethren against the English. :D
