What does courtly excess mean? In terms of the decline of the Abbasid rule.

it means that as the prince and his court began to focus on more extravagant things they focused less and less on the things that were necesary to maintain control and they eventually lost their authority.

This isn't necessarily true. There are lots of cases of extreme "courtly excess" that haven't led to loss of authority. In the literature they're called the wonderfully racialized, exoticist term, "Sultanistic Regimes".

actually the textbook is talking about how the Seljuk Turks invaded and kinda just, controlled the caliphs.

i dont disagree with that, but (and i could be wrong) but i always that it was part of the decline for the abbasids and it made sense within the context of the question.

i coudl be wrong but i thought it was in the abbasid period when women were increasingly forced to remain in the home and were required to wear veils in order to keep men from being defiled. It was a rather patrical system.

from what i know about the general history i certainly wouldnt disagree, there were a lot of occasions where there was a pretty impressive amount of wealth and it didnt really seem to have anyone miss a beat as far as keeping control.
