Hmm. Your source is ambiguously worded. I checked here, and it saysThe Great Lakes...hold an estimated 6 quadrillion gallons of water, about one-fifth of the world's fresh surface water supply and nine-tenths of the U.S. supply.
I think that means it holds the equivalent of 90% of the US supply, not that it actually supplies 90% of the US. I seriously doubt people in Los Angeles drink water from the Great Lakes...
Not that any of this matters, it's just that when I first read what you said, it took me aback a bit - don't you ever get localised droughts in the USA??!
