I agree That bridge was quite a tragedy..And expect more coming.

We recently had one falling in Quebec, which caused very fewer victims..but every is a loss still. Anyway..

It seems many, many, are going to fall/be on high watch these days. Beeing they were all built years ago all about the same time ( well, not all..but many ) and that nothing has been done to half of them, I bet one of them is going to fall again in N.A.

As I understand people blaming engineers on this ( Well IN quebec ) How are they supposed to take care of every of them all at once?

Anyway...I am not surprised. And I wont be when the next one will fall.

It's not really a matter of engineers finding all the problems with these bridges, it's a matter of getting the money to fix them. North Carolina has one of the best bridge programs in the country, which is good b/c they have one of the highest amounts of state-maintained roads. They replace at least 200 bridges a year in that state alone... I know because my (former) office did the traffic safety studies on every single one and I sealed most of those recommendations.

Mainly architectual engineering, building different shit and seeing how it could be made better. We have made multiple prototypes of bridges, finding out what kind of bridges work best in different conditions, and my teacher would bitch if we didnt say rupture. :P

are you fucking joking? 7 dead (or around that number), 20 cars still in the water (basically saying there are more dead) and many more injured, but i guess its "only a bridge". perhaps you are just ignorant but i think you are just a prick.

Well spoken Captain. I was kinda surprised when this thread of mine received a response like that. I also heard that some lady called into a radio station and complained that all the debris was going to hurt her rowing team cuz they had a championship the next week . Needless to say the radio station gave her some hell for that .

Why?

Just replying to posts say typing (in caps) to the effect that the person who's post you are replying to is lacking in the brain department doesn't help the view that you are any better off.

I admit, I didn't need to post the IDIOT post. Cawk's idiocy was obvious enough to stand alone. I was playing the role of "master of the obvious", which is something I'm quite good at.

But really, there's no reason for me to lower myself into an arguement with someone who's arguements are deviod of logic and reason. So no, I'm not going to pick it apart, but I am going to point out idiocy when I see it.

actually i think he was making a point about the narrow view of western news media, i''m sure more people died in darfur today at the hands of people then were killed on that bridge. i know you cant quantify one human life against another but i get sick of seeing ten minutes of a half hour new program devoted to high housing prices and like a minute about hundreds killed in iraq, palestine, sudan, etc etc.

anyway back to the point, what kind of modelling is involved in finding out what happened to this bridge? is it computer or re-enactment or both? also i am considering switching to a civil degree or maybe doing it post-grad, any thoughts wicked?

yes i realize the point he was making. yet do you think it is not incredibly stupid to say one life is more valuable then the next? in no way was i saying that the small number who died in the bridge accident even compares to the large number of people dieing in Darfur. but to say that there deaths dont even matter or that the accident itself is not news worthy is completely idiotic and insensitive. that was the point i was trying to make to the cawk.

dude... i live in MN and this thing was hitting everywhere, couldn't use cell phones, I knew someone who was under the bridge that runs right next to it when it fell.

It started with the middle falling then the other 2 sides just fell with it.[/code]

A very good article on how they'll model the collapse to determine the cause:

Thats neat how technology can do that nowadays. Musta been a pain to reassemble the entire thing to see how it fell apart.
