So “One Day Election” huh?

“Go back” to that?

How long did it take for them to determine a winner of the Presidential Election of 1800?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1800_Unit ... l_election

Americans first began the custom of weekday voting in 1845, when Congress passed a federal law designating the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November as Election Day.

Before then, states were allowed to hold elections any time they pleased within a 34-day period before the first Wednesday in December,

https://www.history.com/news/why-is-ele ... n-november

Why not “go back” to allowing a month to vote?

No state releases complete and final results on election night, nor have they ever done so in modern history, according to experts, AP reported.

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/elect ... s-counted/

n 1824, four men competed for president: John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, and William Crawford. States cast their votes from Oct. 26 to Dec. 1, 1824. When Congress counted the electoral votes, no one candidate had won a majority. The terms of the 12th amendment forced the House of Representatives to hold a contingent election, which Adams won on Feb. 9, 1825.

https://www.governing.com/now/history-t ... g-new.html

Hmmm seems like “one day elections” and “finishing out the winner right away” are not constant historical precedents.

Maybe you’d prefer we “go back” to only allowing white male property owners to vote as well?

1800? when there was not even a telegram around? NO Radio or TV or Internet?

THAT is your comparison? I should not be surprised by such an idiotic comment and analysis by jimb. :o

In this day when we have nearly INSTANT communication, and when Florida, of "hanging chad" fame, can report results of some 8 million votes by 9 PM the same day, the delays in some states seems a poor utilization of resources. We can and should do better. This is 2022, not 1800. There have been a FEW changes, such as moving Inauguration date to January, AND much more. To use the same bad analysis, we should travel by horse and not by automobile, and we should communicate by "SNAIL" MAIL and not be text message.

Idiot. The other idiot suggested we should ‘go back’ to when results were reported the same day.

My point is… this has NEVER happened.

Not in 2020, not in 2000, never in the 1900’s… and never in the 1800’s.

NEVER

So there’s no magical time to “go back to” when this has happened.

Now..if you want to say we can do better. OK.
We can have a conversation about that.

… but please don’t say I’m making a bad comparison using the past when I am responding to the other idiot’s point about it being better in the past.

You picked 1800 as your example. That was a stoooopid point to make, or a terrible choice as an example to TRY to make your point.

Get it together, jimb. Are you going to discuss things intelligently or NOT? It seems NOT, as that is your usual modus operandi.

Is 1800 not in the past? Is it not a time someone like Confed might try to suggest we “go back to”.

He was “declared” the winner by the MEDIA. Not by the counting of ALL the votes.

Aren’t you one of those “the media is biased” types?

The media was able to safely declare Regan winner because he was ahead by significant majority. On election night 1984 when they “declared” Regan had won they still HAD NOT FINISHED COUNTING ALL THE VOTES.

IS YOUR BRAIN ABLE TO PROCESS THIS FACT?

This rant is related to elections but is unrelated to our ability to “count all the votes” on election night.

NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF THIS COUNTRY HAVE ALL VOTES BEEN COUNTED ON ‘ELECTION NIGHT!

for the record…

* I think we should be able to vote in person for a month (or at least a few weeks) prior to the election.
* I support mail-in ballots but think they should be limited (to people who can’t vote in person) and requested not offered.
-> The simple fact is that there are some people who just CANNOT get to a polling place on THAT SPECIFIC DAY.

* I also support requiring ID to vote. I know this is a “challenge” for some groups, but I think THAT is the problem that needs to be fixed. We could make getting ID free and easy. The State can still charge a fee for driving licenses or hunting licenses… but a simple ID can and should be free and easy to get.
