Uncle Tom’s Cabin

Postby HitRed on Sat Oct 15, 2022 8:40 pm

I will be reading Uncle Tom’s Cabin also called Life Among the Lowly. This was brought about by a radio program stating…

1. It greatly impacted readers in England, France and the United States. Going so far, to hint, it forced the American Civil War to happen.

2. It is the most referenced but never actually read book.

You can decide if either are true. But do to these claims I’m going to read it.

I did start to read it a couple years ago but never finished.

If you finish it, maybe I'll be inspired to resume.

I listened to the audiobook version.
I think it was included on my wife’s Audible account.

It was well worth the listen and I think would be a good read as well, but can;t claim to have read it.

I read it, but so long ago I have little memory of it. I think I quite liked it, but I've discovered recently that there were quite a few books I liked as a teen that I find unreadable now.

Is it the biography of Ilhan Omar? The Muslim woman who put her face on the organisation that has killed more Muslims than any other since the Crusades.

Of course not. It's not even about how Nancy Green was replaced by Agnes Moodey for refusing to sail to France, then they claimed Agnes was the original spokesperson.

the “humor” in the book is very sarcastic kinda like a Civil War Era “Colbert Report”… Uncle Tom is very apologetic for his “master” but all his commentary points out the hypocrisy of the slave society that existed in the American South at that time.

Maybe another analogy is “All in the Family”... where Archie is basically an ignorant bigot, but all his actions and words demonstrate his own hypocrisy/ignorance.

I recommend it highly… it’s a short listen, so if you can’t read it try to find an audio version on audible or public library.

The opening chapter is the best I have ever read. The depth of the characters is unreal. It's like going back in time. I hope she can keep this up. If so, this is going to be quite a read.

WTF are you talking about?

We are trying to discuss the merits of the novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. Are you trying to make this about modern politics and spew more of your nasty racist shit?

------------You brought up Archie.... George is the same...If you bring up Archie...A character from the 1970's A.D....You have to include George Jefferson...A character, who is the same as Archie in the 1970's A.D....Both hard working....Who want to work on their own...What people say, don't stop them..... George doesn't cry, I am a victim...Works hard, has his own business, becomes a millionaire, or well off..... Archie just wants to go to work, come home, be left alone... Neither cares what others say, they speak their own minds...Neither resembles a character from the 19th century A.D....
------------ In the 20th century A.D... People were different...
------------ In the South , people didn't care , were nice to each other...A White person would say HI, be friendly, Southern Hospitality....With Black people....with one exception... Didn't want Black people to say be, Police Chief, Mayor, Governor...

------------ In the North, people didn't care how far Black people would advance...Become Police Chief, Mayor, etc...They didn't want to associate, talk , be friendly, keep their distance...
------------- George becomes a millionaire/ well off...Archie just wants to be left alone...Archie wasn't trying to stop George from succeeding in life...So on your part...A horrible analogy....
------------- Like I state in my 3 tricks of the Democratic Party Thread.....By the Mid 1980's A.D...until around 2010 A.D... America was doing fine, All people were coming together, getting along....Until Identity politics, led by Obama and the Democratic Party, Blew America wide open.... Pushing Americans back into separate camps... Doesn't matter what you come up with on that Fact....Facts are Facts...

Have you read (or listened to the audio version of) Uncle Tom’s Cabin?

If the answer is ‘NO’ then you have no standing upon which to judge my analogy.

Uncle Tom, like Archie Bunker, just wants to be left alone and do best in his station in life.
(Even though he’s a slave he has no desire to be free, he’s just content in his station.)

Uncle Tom, like Archie Bunker, says a lot of shit that makes sense to him… but when looked at from the outside is ridiculous.

They ARE NOT exactly the same… my comparison does not suggest they are exactly identical.
My comparison is primarily focussed on how the book and TV show both use humor to convey a political message.

Go read the book.

Perhaps you are unable to see the message that the writers of “All in the Family” are attempting to convey through humor.
It would NOT surprise me if you completely missed this in your viewing of the show.
