Federal officials confirmed this week that it would be “entirely illegal” for Beijing to open police stations on Canadian soil, but that it would nevertheless fit within a pattern of growing Chinese interference in Canadian affairs.

The hearing was dominated by recent reports that Chinese law enforcement had opened three “service stations” in the Greater Toronto Area.

Last month, a report by the human rights group Safeguard Defenders detailed the existence of more than 50 “service stations” operated around the world by Chinese security services.

Also, this isn't unique to Canada. Since Biden's "election" Chinese service stations have been opened in the US to covertly rendition ChiCom critics.

Sounds like they are acting as 'informal embassies', or at least that's what China is saying. Renew passport, Chinese drivers license ect since pandemic made travel back to china to deal with these things difficult... kinda sounds like Canadian gov't officials are claiming its more of a self policing for Chinese communities in T.O., though finding very little substantiation so far.

(was hoping a Canadian might enlighten us)

I honestly don't know the truth of the matter.

I have heard similar allegations. I don't know how much of it is explicit truth and how much is just overwrought paranoia.

Obviously the Chinese government invests a lot in covert operations abroad. Whether it is true that our government is turning a blind eye to these or whether is is just the same as everywhere else I cannot tell.

I got this part… even “informal embassies” should be registered/sanctioned by the local gov’t.

I’m more curious what other activities they are accused on doing.

The "police stations" by China in foreign countries is mainly reported and played up in the EPOCH TIMES, which does anything to put down China since it is run by Chinese religious dissidents. Many conservative extremists will play up Epoch Times stories.

There is a report by a human rights group that says the stations have people that persuade Chinese citizens abroad to return home if they are involved in criminal activities as well as doing Chinese government paperwork stuff like renewing IDs. There appeared to be a PR push on Fox News about these Chinese stations by a Human Rights activist, Laura Harth, working for Safeguard Defenders, Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, and Hong Kong Watch, the human rights groups opposed to the Chinese government.

Essentially they are accused of doing things like finding Chinese dissidents who have fled here from China, and blackmailing them into either being silent or in extreme cases returning home for trial.
