Zhukov's troops were rushed (rushed/russian )...To help save Moscow , since they were not needed in the east...He would battle it out with German Field Marshal Von Manstein , who gave Zhukov nightmares...When Von Manstein was relieved of his command by Hitler...Zhukov rolled to Victory .... In May 1945 A.D. Admiral Doneitz announced German surrender...The Germans surrendered , signed with the Allies 1st...Then they surrendered to the Russians in a separate signing...Zhukov accepted the final German Surrender ending the war in Europe of WW2....Zhukov would be made Minister of Defence of the Soviet Union...He would sort of meet up with Von Manstein again...As Von Manstein would lead/plan NATO's defenses...Zhukov would lead/plan the Warsaw Pact's...... First, the Russians suffered greatly at the hands of the German in WWII. I did not realize the hatred Germany and especially Hitler had for Russians and other Slavic peoples. You can read more about this plan, called Operation Barbarossa and the GPO (Generalplan Ost). I learned of this in some detail reading about that part of WWII for some CC posts about one year ago. Until then, I was rather ignorant of the depth of the German hatred for the Slavic people of Central and Eastern Europe.

So to honor Russian Leaders, such as General Zhukov, is to honor also the many Russian troops and civilians killed in WWII. To defeat Hitler (and his Axis allies) and a well prepared Germany military "machine" took the efforts and sacrifice of many from many nations.

However, to blame the German losses on the Eastern Front to the Russians on ONE man, the commander, is rather myopic. There are too many other factors that led to the Russian/Soviet victory over Germany.

Take as ONE HUGE factor population. As I recall, Germany had a population of some 60 million people versus 100 million (actually 200 million, on one website) for the USSR or Soviet Union, whatever is was officially called in 1941, when Hitler decided to attack his "ally" to start the Russian-German phase of the war. (Germany's other allies did contribute some troops to the Eastern Front, such as the flanks of the Germany occupation of Stalingrad, again, something I recently learned when reading more on that battle.) Since the Russians did not have to worry about fighting Japan, Russia focused all (or nearly all) its resources there. Germany was fighting in several places, including North Africa and had lots of troops in France and its western front. Hitler was, like Napoleon and other megalomaniacs, over-confident when attacking. Hitler made a HUGE mistake when he got into the two front war, just as Germany did in WWI. Hitler thought he had basically beaten the West down to The Brits and a bit of partisan resistance. Remember that it was (essentially) the Russian Winter that defeated Napoleon when he invaded and captured Moscow in 1812 or so. Hitler did not prepare for the Russian Winter (factor #2), thinking that Russia was going to be "rolled" like was France in 1940. The Soviets and Russian lands were too vast (#3) and their peoples too numerous, brave, and determined to be defeated by the Nazis. Hitler came close to a knock out and conquest of Russia, but, like Napoleon, was ultimately defeated.
