There are certainly reasonable repercussions for hateful speech… you can lose your job if your employer thinks your speech is inappropriate, you can be shunned by civil society, your family and kids can be shunned for your behavior., you can lose your season tickets if screaming shit from the stands. All fair IMHO… but to be jailed for being an asshole seems extreme. If the rant threatened these footballers physically, or incited people to violence against them, that may be criminal… but why is being a asshole a criminal offense?

There is a lot of “speech” that’s way more harmful to society than some random racist rant. Speech that’s completely protected that I see as more criminal… like news reporting that perpetuates fake news or knowingly manipulates data to support bad decisions. How about politicians who lie, campaigning in some platform they have no intent of supporting once in office. Or how about lying us into a war that kills thousands? If these things wer criminal we’d soon find ourselves in a society where we can safely ignore the tiny number of people who are still racist.

I've always liked to do my own thing. So being tied to the military or any governmental job was never an option.
