According to Adam Lauring, an infectious disease expert at the University of Michigan at Ann Harbor, there are more variants of COVID-19 because there are more infections. Dr. Pardis Sabeti, an evolutionary biologist at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, fears that in one of these mutations the virus will become much more dangerous. The risk is such that the World Health Organization (WHO) itself has asked countries to reinforce identification tasks.
While COVID-19 mutations have so far only made it more infectious, there is evidence that it could change in the future to make it more resistant to certain drugs. It could also make the virus much more difficult to detect in patients with current tests at health centers.
