That's spectacular!

I figured as one might, "If I were there, I would shoot some bears. Problem solved."

Nope. There were some guys there shooting some bears. Just not enough of them to balance out the incoming bear population.

I like how it displayed exactly why defunding the police is a bad idea. Yet for sure you'll get a "Yeah, but..." response.

Austin has tent 'cities'. When the bears show up I'll let you know.

Every location is going to have different issues. In NH it’s bears. In NH garbage may attract bears. In Austin where it’s hotter, maybe the climate conditions cause more problems with human waste and garbage decomposing?

When you have groups of people living in proximity you have to find common ways to deal with garbage, human waste, etc... otherwise you are asking for disease and health issues. You need to have rules otherwise people living “upstream” can contaminate the water supply of people living “downstream”... even if they do it inadvertently. etc.

I’m not saying we need all the rules we have now... but having “no rules” is a different extreme that’s also not good.
===

As an aside there are a lot of bears in the mountains in NH. When I would go camping we had to take precautions to keep bears away and keep our food safe. We’d put dry food in bags (duffels), and then throw some rope over high branches and tie the bags up high. The bears could probably figure this out if we stayed there for months but we’d only be there for a weekend or a week at most. Cold food we couldn’t hang, so we just made sure that was in airtight coolers. You NEVER brought food into your tent at night. If a bear was gonna raid your camp you wouldn’t want to give them reason to come to your tent.

I never had a camp raided, we were usually up late drinking and always had big fires... so the noise and fire would dissuade bears.

I have seen the aftermath of a raided camp... just one time. During the day we’d hike an scout for wood, and would meet other campers and we ran into a camp site not too far from ours one time where the peeps had no clue and just left food out. No one got hurt but the site was a mess.

Jim scores 8 for an informative bear post.
Doom 10 for a hilarious bear post.

Calgary is a pretty big city by Canadian Standards. It is also quite spread out so it is fairly large by area.

Grizzlys, Black bears and brown bears are probably about 50 miles away. They don't come here but many of the campgrounds we enjoy are in their area. One of my wife's work buddies won't go toward the mountains because she is terrified of them. We rarely see any.

Sometimes Cougars wander into the city here. Lots of deer, coyotes, too many hares. Occasionally a moose.

Even with signs, some with photographs, very clearly explaining the problem and laws, people still leave food out camping and get fines. I would think anyone who saw even a simple sign that said. "You are now in Bear Country, Do Not Leave Food Out." Would be more careful, but no.

Last time I saw a bear it was heading toward a campground so I stopped at the ranger station to tell them. The ranger says, "Would you like to make a bear report?" I thought I was. Then after asking a few more times. I said, "I guess." She picks up the phone, dials and tells someone there is a person wishing to make a bear report.

I guess I did not actually want to, but I did.
