China relieves African debt

Postby mrswdk on Fri Jun 19, 2020 11:02 am

Just last month, African nations rejected a G20 debt relief plan that would have damaged their credit ratings and restricted their access to private finance:

President Xi, sensitive to the risks Africa faces from COVID-19 and keen to ensure that at least one nation is behaving responsibly in Africa, has since held separate debt relief discussions with the African Union (AU) and reached a deal that the AU has been quick to call on other nations to learn from and emulate:

inb4 the usual trollbots who accused China of trying to laden developing countries with unsustainable debt come into this thread with bizarre rants about how Huawei is plotting to inject Africans with COVID-19 so Xi can extort Angola for oil, probably

They don’t need to infect Africans with Covid to extort them... in fact it’d be counter productive.

Didn't China already own most of Africa? It's much easier for Chinese companies to do business in Africa because they don't have to stick to the anti-corruption laws in Europe and the USA.

If China want sweatshops in Africa then they'll also have to import the workers. Hard work and Africa have never been uttered in the same sentence.

The irony of this statement coming from a Brit.

Why ironic? I miss the irony.
Are Brits supposedly lazy?

I think the comment is biased and borderline racist, but not ironic.

Could the irony be in the suggestion that another country might want to take advantage of Africa under the guise of benevolence?

That could be the point he’s trying to make...but I don’t think that’s irony.
