While it is his personal opinion, I can't say he is making that up. A few of the results of poverty there, are theft and begging are basically vocations for quite a few people. Sometimes it can be violent.
Also very noticeable is people creating ways to hope you will tip them. Pretending to be a bathroom attendant is popular.
Inside the pyramid I encountered a fellow that would pretend to be the guide. It was actually pretty fun for me. He had a little speech, "Come. Observe, the queens chamber. Come, come. This is the Kings chamber." Then out came the hand at the end. My actual guides who waited outside, made fun of me for giving the guy money when I told them about it, but it was like a couple of dollars to me and probably somewhat significant for the guy.
Part of the reason for my wording, "for me" and "most" is I was writing about my somewhat sheltered experience there over a few days.
I also notice that while not being there to experience day to day life, from events that make the international news it certainly seems the mood may have shifted toward unpleasant.
It is unfortunate but, when some foul elements there expose themselves. It can result in people being killed. Particularly tourists, those considered westerners and Christians. It had happened before we went and happens every so often, much too often. Though in my opinion once would qualify as too often.
Obviously that tends to make it tough to think most of the people are quite kind and friendly.
Conversely some years, we would go to Banff and experience plenty of rudeness. I bet they missed those tourists they complain about this spring.
