In the general case, I'm in highway maintenance. In this specific case, the painting of the pretty white lines down the side of the Her Majesty's highway so that Her Majesty's taxpaying lemmings know that they shouldn't drive off into the ditch.

It’s important because lemming need lines.

Though it could probably wait a day.

Is your boss Canadian? Your boss sounds American.

Really?

I thought most Americans would have more respect for the national July holiday.

If you are referring to abusive employers, there are way too many of those in Canada.

2d said it better and probably more concisely than I would have.

Be glad you do not have to walk down the highway tearing off 4 ft long pieces of reflective tape and patting it down on the hot concrete every 40ish ft. Your way is easier.

Yeah, I've seen a contractor using tape. It sucks.

Yes... I was joking in the sense that the boss seemed abusive, unreasonable, mean-spirited... qualities many attribute to “AMERICANS’.

Fair enough, sorry I ruined the joke.

I have met many pleasant Americans and there are plenty of Canadians that I would never want to work for.

Most people in smaller towns are usually much more pleasant than the ones in large cities.

One noticeable exception for me was Cairo, people there were very nice for the most part. There definitely were some jerks but we did not encounter many, they were also easy to ignore since most Egyptians were so cordial.

That genuinely surprises me.

I have a friend from Cairo. He tells me that random attacks on tourists are considered a mandatory rite of passage, that in Cairo a boy is not considered to be a man until he has robbed or stabbed at least one tourist.

Maybe he's just compensating for something.

While it is his personal opinion, I can't say he is making that up. A few of the results of poverty there, are theft and begging are basically vocations for quite a few people. Sometimes it can be violent.

Also very noticeable is people creating ways to hope you will tip them. Pretending to be a bathroom attendant is popular.

Inside the pyramid I encountered a fellow that would pretend to be the guide. It was actually pretty fun for me. He had a little speech, "Come. Observe, the queens chamber. Come, come. This is the Kings chamber." Then out came the hand at the end. My actual guides who waited outside, made fun of me for giving the guy money when I told them about it, but it was like a couple of dollars to me and probably somewhat significant for the guy.

Part of the reason for my wording, "for me" and "most" is I was writing about my somewhat sheltered experience there over a few days.

I also notice that while not being there to experience day to day life, from events that make the international news it certainly seems the mood may have shifted toward unpleasant.

It is unfortunate but, when some foul elements there expose themselves. It can result in people being killed. Particularly tourists, those considered westerners and Christians. It had happened before we went and happens every so often, much too often. Though in my opinion once would qualify as too often.

Obviously that tends to make it tough to think most of the people are quite kind and friendly.

Conversely some years, we would go to Banff and experience plenty of rudeness. I bet they missed those tourists they complain about this spring.

Oh, so many things your post makes me think of!

The fake bathroom attendant -- he crops up all over the the world. I've even seen him here in Niagara Falls.

About tipping tour guides -- I remember going to an Etruscan burial cave in Italy. My mother tipped the tour guide 500 lira. He looked like he was about to punch her in the face. She said to me, "do you think I tipped him too much?" I did the math in my head (the official exchange rate was something like 7500 lira to to the dollar) and said, "no mom, you just gave him eight cents."

About Banff -- Banff itself was kind of an ordinary tourist trap -- friendly enough but wildly overpriced -- but the place that really had an effect on me was Canmore. I spent a couple days in Canmore, and in two full days I never met a person who wasn't smiling. I remember wondering, are these people stoned or are they genuinely happy all the time? It didn't seem to be an act. Every time I had a conversation the people really seemed to be full of positive vibes. It's the only town I've ever been to where I didn't hear a negative word from anybody about anything.
